Crema's Take

This charming Brookline bakery captures the warmth of Japanese hospitality through handcrafted buns and pastries that feel like edible art—think Studio Ghibli-inspired creations like their celebrated Matcha Totoro Pan with its perfectly balanced sweet filling. Beyond the Instagram-worthy treats, it's the genuinely kind staff and cozy atmosphere that keep locals coming back, whether they're grabbing a quick coffee or settling in for a slower afternoon with matcha tea and conversation. Every reviewer seems to leave with the same feeling: they've discovered something special that tastes like it came straight from Japan.

Lovely, tasty, and cute selection of baked goods! Would be back, the Matcha Totoro Pan had such a rich filling without being too sweet, and the bun itself is warm and perfectly baked without being too thick.

🎉Discover the magic at Japonaise Bakery. This cozy spot is a true gem. What makes it so special? Their authentic Japanese treats and beautifully crafted buns inspired by Studio Ghibli — they’re truly buns of art! 🥖 🎨 Every visit feels like a delicious adventure, and I love coming back for more. If you’re craving a bakery that’s both charming and unique, Japonaise is the place to be — it’s simply un-bun-lievable!

We immediately came here after watching the latest episode of My Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skills that showed delicious Japanese Cakes and pastries. If you're looking for Japanese pastries, THIS is the place to go. We got the strawberry short cake and Matcha slice - whipped cream was heavenly and Matcha cake was delicate. Best of all - not too sweet. Anpan (not pictured cuz it disappeared off the plate so quick lmao) and Totoro pan had the classic Japanese bread taste with respective fillings. Best of all, highly, highly recommend their cream puffs. They are GENEROUSLY filled every time. The matcha one was SO GOOD, with the bitter/sweet matcha flavored cream true to authentic taste. The family that runs the place is hardworking and sweet. Def check them out if you're around - pick up a dessert or "Asa-pan" (breakfast bread) for your next morning for a little treat to start off the day :)

I couldn’t recommend coming here more. I’ve been to this bakery a few times and their pastries are beautiful, fun, delicious and take me back to Japan. I couldn’t decide which filling I wanted and commented about how I love them all! That’s when an employee in the bakery kindly offered me a new bakery item to try (item in first picture). I was so surprised at the kind gesture that I felt inspired to write a review.
