Medici Roasting
2222 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX
Crema's Take
“Medici Roasting thrives as a serious espresso and pour-over destination in the UT Austin area, where the academic energy runs deep and students actually stay focused through Friday afternoons. Their matcha deserves special mention—the rose strawberry matcha is made with quality tea and proper ratios that avoid the diluted mediocrity you'll find elsewhere—though consistency with espresso drinks seems to vary. This two-level spot pairs thoughtfully sourced coffee with solid pastries and reliable wifi, making it genuinely ideal for those who want to linger with intention rather than just pass through.”

Medici is the best coffee shop in the UT Austin Area, handily beating Starbucks, Lucky Lab, and I think onpar with Centro, but they are good for different things. But the main thing is coffee: Medici is a Roastery (like Merit), which I like only because the quality of the coffee can be ascribed to them, and not just having the decent sense to buy well-roasted coffee. I also suspect that since roasting is the single highest value-added step in the cofy chain, prices are a bit lower. Anyway, Medici’s coffee is consistently good with sufficient options in a nice location. Its the quintessential college coffee shop that you want nextdoor.
FAVOURITE STUDY SPOT. Amazing matcha (highly recommend the rose strawberry matcha). The matcha is good quality and good ratio - not diluted like most matcha places. Great pastries too! A lot of nice seating and lovely vibe.
Ordered an iced latte, got watery milk an essence of coffee. Not sure how it’s possible for a latte to taste like nothing at all, couldn’t taste the milk. The coffee was barely there, it was like a whisper in the back of your throat. I’m no coffee aficionado but I appreciate the different roasts and undertones of a good cup of joe. You don’t get that here. Spacious coffee shop with two floors and many tables so I can see why students go here to study, probably for the ambiance not the coffee.
A two-level coffee shop in a university district, and the academic energy here is real. While other coffee shops start shifting to a weekend vibe by Friday afternoon, this place stays focused—even on a Saturday, most people are locked into their screens, studying or working. It’s great knowing there’s a spot where you can still find a productive atmosphere on the weekend. The coffee is excellent, and the space feels open and inviting, thanks to the high ceilings and second level. We grabbed a table upstairs, which offered a nice view of the café below. Good music, good design, and a balanced mix of quiet and activity. By the time we arrived, all pastries were sold out, but that’s on us for coming after the morning rush. Clearly, this place keeps busy, and for good reason. If you’re looking for a solid coffee spot with a studious, focused atmosphere, Medici Roasting delivers. A must-visit if you need a weekend work session with great coffee.
I got the Strawberry Rose Matcha as it was a special drink on the blackboard recommended by the batista, and it sounded yummy but the drink itself didn't taste like much, very watery with a hint of matcha and strawberry flavor. Not very sweet, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it was unflavored in general. The service was nice though, not overtly excited but amiable workers. The atmosphere of the place itself is my favorite part, would be very good for studying, hanging out, or drawing. I don't particularly like the art on the walls though, very trite and bad paintings. But I respect that they're all local Austin artists. I do enjoy the cardboard still life's a lot.
