The Stacks Coffeehouse
1831 N Killingsworth St, Portland, OR
Crema's Take
“Tucked into Portland's North neighborhood, The Stacks Coffeehouse earns its cozy reputation with genuinely pleasant staff, shelves lined with books, and a relaxed vibe that welcomes both laptop workers and lingerers equally. They've got a serious commitment to milk-forward drinks and quality tea (their London Fog devotees swear by it), though fair warning: the coffee leans toward mid-tier pricing. If you're planning a visit, aim for earlier in the day to snag their pastries, and know that monthly Sunday poetry readings can transform the usually mellow space into standing-room-only territory.”

Cute vibe! I came in the afternoon and I wish they still had some snacks left, but overall a chill place to work.
I almost never leave bad reviews, but I wish I’d had a heads up before wasting the time and money going in today. My group got 2 lattes, an americano, and some breakfast tacos. The coffee was some of the worst I’ve had in a long time. The americano especially looked and tasted like dirty water. None of us finished our drinks. And the tacos were just okay (literally egg and potato or egg and a strip of bacon in a mission flour wrap). The service was also not great. I totally get being burnt out from customer service (worked in the industry for years), but I don’t get being rude to folks just as they’re walking up and saying hello/ordering. Overall definitely do not recommend this place unless you’re going for the books.
Fantastic coffee shop. Nice staff and a fair amount of books on the shelves. Be warned, though: once a month, on Sundays, they host a poetry reading that's open to the public. It gets overly crowded and even before the event, you'll often get pressured for your seat if you're there just to hang out, work, or read and not part of the poetry event. There's passive-aggressiveness in the way people ask for your seat. Or, they'll blatantly roll their eyes and say, "well, this is a Humble Poet's Society event." This is BEFORE the event even starts.
Staff was pleasant. But if you are looking for a place that has more milk options than flavored syrups then this is the spot. Coffee itself was overpriced and mid tier. Better 32oz iced mocha at Dutch Bros for the same $6.50 this place charges for a 16oz mostly ice iced mocha(?) with what tastes like over roasted burnt beans. Oh and I’m sure the gluten free zucchini kale bars are fabulous but some real pastries would’ve been nice. Fortunately plaid pantry is across the street for those.
I’m so glad I stumbled upon this coffee shop on a trip up to North Portland. I ordered a London Fog which was ready quickly and delicious. The atmosphere in here is lovely, my background noise while working on my laptop was mostly that of writers brainstorming and coffee brewing, with a great playlist to underscore everything. I got a lot of work done here, but can’t wait to come back again to just sit and read for a while, as many other customers were. They also offer a variety of community events here, mostly focused on writing workshops and brainstorming sessions, which were great to see! Love a place with good drinks and great community engagement, I can tell it’s well loved.
