Night Moves Bread

Crema's Take
“Night Moves Bread is a genuine scratch bakery that's earned serious respect from both home bakers and culinary professionals for their exceptional sourdough and pastries made with real artisanal methods and top-tier ingredients. Beyond the stellar bread, it's a proper neighborhood gathering spot where you can linger over coffee and a flaky pastry at breakfast, grab a thoughtful lunch sandwich, or return on Friday nights for pizza—this is the kind of place locals actively seek out on return visits to Maine. The fact that a Boston Globe feature and chef recommendations keep drawing people to this hard-to-find South Portland gem says everything about the quiet confidence of their craft.”

This is a wonderful spot for breakfast treats, lunch sandwiches, bread, and dinner with Friday pizza night! Everything I've tried from Night moves has been delicious, including: Coffee cake Granola (some of the best I've ever had!) Ginger molasses cookie Turkey sandwich Marigold-citrus shortbread cookies Baltic rye bread Pepperoni pizza And the service is always friendly and efficient. Sometimes there's a line, but everyone is in a good mood because they all know they're in for a treat. Definitely recommend, and can't wait to go back!
I could not wait to try Night Moves Bread after reading about it in the Boston Globe. During a recent visit to Portland, we sought the place out (not easy to find!). We bought 2 loaves. I tried the Baltic Rye first. I sliced it and thought it was doughy at the bottom, but the taste was good, different. I was not sure what the texture of Baltic Rye should be, so I let the doughiness pass. The second loaf was Maple Oatmeal Bread. It, too, was wet and doughy in the bottom center of the loaf, a relatively small area compared to the Baltic Rye. When I make bread, I would never expect a loaf's consistency to be wet and doughy. Once sliced, you could see the difference between the fully baked part and the doughy center. The Oatmeal Maple loaf was tasty, soft crumb, and chewy crust. There was no maple flavor, maybe we did not get what we asked for. The cookies we bought were very good!
Excellent loaves and amazing small bites. Highly recommended by a chef at Twelve during our trip to Portland earlier this year. This is one of those scratch bakeries that ignores the trendy stuff and focuses almost entirely on basic loaves, cookies, and shortbreads. They are obsessive about their freshly milled flour and their time (fermentation), and the result was a texture and aroma that felt completely different from a standard bakery loaf. It was earthier, nuttier, and just felt more alive. The loaf lineup rotates daily (the sweet potato and onion spelt sounded incredible) but we stuck with the signature Bird Bread, and it was excellent. From the small bites, the squash herb cheddar cornbread and the chocolate chip cookie were really good.
I am always excited to visit Night Moves on my visits to Maine; it's a must stop for their sourdough country loaf which is an amazingly tasty, hardy bread with a great crunchy crust and soft inside. This bread makes the best strata ever and great for toast or sandwiches. Their seeded bird bread is also great for toast or sandwiches. There brownies are the best I have ever tasted with a rich chocolately texture and taste. The shop is quite small and is very busy so service can seem a bit rushed, but their breads are worth it!
As a sourdough baker, I can say Night Moves knows the moves to produce exceptional loaves—and pastries! Their ingredients are of the highest quality and their methods are true artisanal craftsmanship, using slow fermentation true to the tradition. The bird bread is especially tasty, loaded with seeds and freshly milled whole grain spelt flour. Check their schedule for the rotating menu of flavors.
