Moon and River Cafe
115 S Ferry St, Schenectady, NY
Crema's Take
“Moon and River Cafe feels like stepping into your favorite person's living room, where the walls are covered with art and curiosities to discover and the owner personally tends to every order with genuine warmth. This eclectic vegetarian spot has quietly anchored Schenectady for nearly two decades, earning a devoted following with an unexpectedly expansive menu of affordable sandwiches, scrambles, and breakfast fare that punches well above its modest, cash-only price point. It's the kind of place where time slows down naturally—whether you're settling in after a show at Proctors or stopping by for an unhurried meal that feels like it was made specifically for you.”

There's a nostalgic familiarity in this place. But not over the top like a big family reunion, more like when you visited your grandparents on a weekday just for after school and they made you lunch. The absolute definition of home style. One of those places where you'll either love it or hate it. I loved it. Portions are small for usa food, so if you're really hungry, maybe try another place nearby. This place is not like a regular cafe where everyone has a fake smile and check on you every 5 minutes. It feels more honest and casual.
6 of us stopped in after a Proctors show. It was a quick walk after sitting for awhile. Cash only but ATM available. Everything was amazing. The menu was the biggest I have ever seen. All of our dishes were remarkable, we had the Swedish meatballs, crab cake and fig & feta as appetizers. The one man chef made each dish with love and care.
an eclectic vegetarian cafe run by the owner. we arrived just as he was opening the cafe, and he made us a ciabatta sandwich and a veggie tofu scramble. he was also able to make and wrap up some sandwiches for us for our train. the prices are very affordable and the food is good! be advised that this place is cash only, but there is an ATM.
So friendly and so much to look at! A very eclectic place with all kinds of art and games and posters and little things to find. Our order was taken by the very friendly owner who also did all the cooking. The food was really tasty, spiced perfectly, and vegan or whatever level of vegetarian or not that you prefer. I had eggs while my boyfriend had a chickpea egg substitute that was pretty good (we are not vegan so it was a new thing for us to try). There was live music and the people were very friendly and sang songs we could sing along with. It is not a spic-and-span modern restaurant. You will feel transported to a different time. I will also say that I have a very delicate constitution, and I did find eating here. It was a lovely experience to wrap up our time in Schenectady.
19 years, that's how long the Moon and River Cafe has been gracing Schenectady and I never knew it. With the most affordable food in the capital district, one of the most personable and unique owners, an array of live music and a wonderful local clientele I'm almost scared to let others know about this diamond in the rough out of fear it becomes overcrowded. But alas, everyone deserves to eat off the largest vegetarian and vegan menu in the capital district. Good home cooked food. Good home cooked atmosphere. Edit, I went the day following my initial review, so yesterday... and plan to go again today. I look forward to exploring the menu and trying all the enchanting dishes they have.
