Gotan Hoboken
770 Jackson St, Hoboken, NJ
Crema's Take
“Gotan Hoboken draws serious coffee enthusiasts and remote workers with its spacious, design-forward atmosphere and genuinely creative menu that goes beyond standard café fare, though recent reviews suggest inconsistencies in both service execution and pricing warrant attention. The kitchen seems committed to elevated breakfast and light food options with thoughtful healthy choices, making it feel more like a destination than a grab-and-go spot, but you'll want to check the temperature and confirm your order before settling in for that long work session.”

UPDATE: To date, the owner has bullied me over email, including rude personal remarks about my career, saying I’m not on his level, and to date has refused to provide a refund. Let this update and his responses to other reviews below guide your decision on dining here. There is another review below that also states he is not kind to women. Original review: Two Sundays ago, I stopped in for a simple order — a coffee, a side of eggs, and an avocado (I’m on a medical diet, so I keep my meals basic). Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. The server seemed confused by the order and, rather than asking for help, incorrectly entered it. While my coffee came out promptly, I waited 25 minutes with no food — even as customers who arrived after me and ordered full entrées were served before I was. I finally asked the manager on duty for an update, he apologized and admitted the order had never been properly rung in. My food eventually came out around the 35-minute mark and him going up to the food counter to figure out what happened. He was very kind and offered a refund and said it would process in 3–5 days since only the general manager/owner could issue it. I requested a receipt for the refund but was told I would simply see it back on my card. The refund never appeared. When I followed up via email last week, I was told they “don’t recall this,” and they have since stopped responding. Very disappointing experience and even more disappointing follow-through. I can’t recommend dining here unless you’re comfortable risking poor service and being out your money.
this place should be ashamed of themselves. they charged my daughter $20 for this avocado toast. She asked how many slices of toast came with it. They told her 2. clearly only one came with it. She asked for a plain. The toast wasn’t toasted and avocado was un ripe. unfortunately, this is my second bad experience with this place and I will no longer be giving them any of my business.
Wanted to give this place high reviews because food, service, and atmosphere are all 5/5, but it was very cold here, likely due to the high ceilings, I wore my heavy jacket the whole time, which is not comfortable nor what I expect of enjoying time at a cafe. It’s also 20 degrees outside so I get this is hard, but disappointing. Although, I didn’t see if the second floor is warmer 🤔There was an upcharge on alternative milks making the matcha latte $8 which is high compared to Starbucks/other area options, and it was very thick/dark, so much it stains lips, so wouldn’t recommend and I drink ALOT of Matcha. The bathroom was also out of toilet paper and pretty unclean, perhaps due to the staff primarily being male most of the day. 🤷🏻♀️ The wifi also continually disconnected throughout the 4 hours I was working on my computer. So if you come for 1 hr just to eat I think it’s ideal. Coming to work for 4+ hours, probably not the best. Though there are many tables only a few along the wall and counter has outlets.
Usually, I’m not the type of person who writes negative reviews, but here’s my experience: The place is nice and spacious, but the service isn’t quite what you’d expect from a coffee shop. It’s a good spot to work, but the Wi-Fi only works for one hour. When you connect, there’s even a sign saying the Wi-Fi signal isn’t guaranteed which I found a bit funny 😅. I totally understand if they don’t want people to stay for too long, but if that’s the case, it would be better to clearly mention there’s a time limit.
Gotan Hoboken is by far the best restaurant and coffee shop you can visit in the Hoboken area. The food is fantastic, the menu is not only creative but there's a very good variety of healthy options to choose from (the Mediterranean options should be your first choice!). The atmosphere is great for working on your laptop, background noise is always kept to a minimum, seating is placed comfortably apart from each other with plenty of locations within the restaurant to choose from. Lighting is fantastic and the service is great. The coffee blends and flavorful teas are very nice. The atmosphere is superb and perfect for relaxing, reading and working. The staff maintain a professional demeanor and that simply adds to the ambiance. There isn't any private parking so be prepared to look for public parking if you're driving in the area. Gotan Hoboken is definitely worth your visit, Gotan Hoboken will not disappoint.
