Crema's Take

This Tampa gem punches above its weight with creative signature drinks like their standout S'mores cold brew that keep regulars coming back, paired with a genuinely cozy and cute interior that belies its unassuming exterior. While execution can be inconsistent—some customers rave about their espresso work and breakfast sandwiches while others note the occasional misstep with presentation or bitterness—the warm, friendly vibe and thoughtful food offerings make it a solid neighborhood spot for lingering over a specialty drink or meeting up with friends.

It was my first time here - and I wanted to love it. I ordered a cortado, which was about a dollar more than at other places. It came in a styrofoam cup (hello hotel lobby) and tasted quite bitter. I'm an espresso fan, so I know how it's supposed to taste, ideally. Staff was friendly and service was super quick, and the place is cute - has lots of interesting stuff on the walls. But there's random signage all over advising patrons of where to put dishes and instructing them on bathroom procedures (flushing, locking doors, etc.). All in all it felt a little adversarial toward the customer. I know we live in strange times when people need to be reminded of basic etiquette, but all in, I was a little disappointed.

I recently visited 22nd Street Coffee Shop and was hoping to become a regular, but unfortunately, my experience left me pretty disappointed. I ordered a simple bagel with egg, cheese, and bacon. According to the menu on the wall, that should have totaled about $8.75 before tax: the bagel was $4, egg $2, bacon $2, and cheese $0.75. However, they charged me $12 for a “breakfast sandwich” plus an extra $1 for bacon. When I pointed out the price difference, they told me they have to charge the full sandwich price regardless, and they might only change to a “build-your-own” pricing in a few weeks. To add to this, they tacked on a 3.99% credit card fee, even though they use the Square system, which based on their website only charges 2.6% plus a small fixed fee .15 cents . It felt like they were just pocketing the difference. I’ve driven past this place for years and noticed it’s often empty. Now I understand why. The inside looks nice, and I really wanted to like it, but with inconsistent pricing and extra charges that aren’t transparent, the customer service just doesn’t feel fair. Maybe their coffee is good, and that’s why they get some positive reviews, but overcharging people isn’t a great way to do business. I hope they improve.

Stopped by today and had an AMAZING drink. The Smores cold brew and it was a 10/10. I’ll be back for that! Also had their breakfast sandwich, which was amazing too. Inside is super cute, wish I would have brought my computer to do some work here. Only suggestion is to maybe have some music playing (quietly) on the background. Cute book nook area, and lots of art/craft items for sale. It was very quiet inside, and some music playing quietly would help with that sort of awkward silence. That would be my biggest suggestion. I’ll for sure be back though, music or not. 😁
