Crema's Take

Nestled along Maui's waterfront, this casual spot excels at the kind of unhurried island breakfast that makes you want to linger for hours, with standout dishes like genuinely excellent loco moco and huevos rancheros that locals and visitors alike keep coming back for. The breezy outdoor seating overlooking the water and quick, attentive service create that rare combination of relaxed and welcoming, making it equally suited for a solo coffee contemplation or gathering the whole family after a beach morning. It's the kind of place where a simple breakfast becomes a memory, especially if you snag one of those lucky beachfront tables.

On a recent trip to Maui, we stayed at the Kaanapali Villas. For this review, I want to talk about the on site restaurant,Castaway Cafe. After a few hours on the beach, we were heading back to our condo when tantalizing smells emanating from the open air dining area stopped us in our tracks. As we approached the hostess stand, we were told that since it was such a cool, cloudy day, the head chef decided to create a creamy chicken soup utilizing some odds and ends around their kitchen. I asked if it was the soup we were smelling and they said that it was and brought us a sample. Creamy, hearty, flavorful with big chunks of chicken & elbow macaroni, we ordered the biggest bowl they had! In addition to soup, our party of 5 partook of the fish & chips, fish tacos, kids mac n cheese & of course I had the nachos. These were not just any nachos, the pork was uniquely seasoned with a delicate sauce, the beans hearty & flavorful, with crisp homemade chips, pico, cheese sauce and guac. The fish n chips were well cooked, lightly seasoned & came with a fun basket of french fries while the mahi mahi tacos were served with cilantro lime crema, pico and a side of chips n salsa. The Castaway has a seated, full bar, indoor & outdoor table seating, lovely views of the ocean and excellent service. They also had live music from local performers the night we were there. We interacted with several staff members, all of whom were professional, kind and friendly. We highly recommend the Castaway Cafe if you are looking for a family friendly, delicious meal while visiting Kaanapali Villas.

Came here for dinner and it was an amazing experience. We were seated immediately at a table near the ocean which treated us to a fantastic sunset. Our server Conseta (I hope the spelling is correct) was fantastic. Very quirky individual, but in an entertaining way, singing a lot of good songs as she came around the tables. The food and drinks were excellent. I ordered the lava flow and paradise punch to drink and the fish tacos to eat. This was one of the best dining experiences of my entire vacation. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Absolutely delicious breakfast spot! My husband had the loco moco and I had the huevos rancheros. We sat on the breezeway and had a stunning view of the water. We were seated right away around 9:15am and our food came out quickly after ordering. Our waitress, Karina, was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend!

We came to Castaway Café for brunch and had a really pleasant experience overall. Parking can be a bit tricky, but the restaurant has two free parallel spots right next to the café if you get lucky. Otherwise, you can check in at the hotel front desk for parking validation and park nearby, which helps. We were seated immediately in a beautiful outdoor table just a few feet from the ocean. The view and atmosphere were fantastic and definitely one of the highlights of the visit. For food, I ordered the omelet, my wife had the avocado toast, and we also shared a banana bread. Compared to other breakfasts we’ve had in Hawaii, this was actually very good. The food was well-prepared and flavorful. The banana bread itself was tasty and moist. The only small downside was the butter served with the banana bread — it was salted, which didn’t really pair well with a sweet banana bread. The coffee was also just okay, nothing special. Overall, great location, solid food, and a relaxing brunch experience. Definitely worth visiting, especially for the oceanfront seating.

We walked down the board walk and had an Amazing breakfast! My husband had loco moco and he said it was the best one he’s had so far on the island. I had the eggs Benedict and it took second place compared to my very favorite. It was absolutely beautiful to see the ocean from where we sat loved the service Jamie did a wonderful job. Definitely can’t wait to come back again. Cool cozy and perfect for a morning date with your husband!
