Crema's Take

Nestled in San Antonio's beautifully renovated historic Gunter Hotel, this bakery pairs thoughtfully crafted traditional coffee drinks with excellent pastries in a lobby that feels both elegant and genuinely welcoming. It's the kind of place where you can settle in for a slow sit with reliable wifi and plenty of parking, making it perfect for meetings or simply soaking in the charm of the building's restored architectural details. The staff here shares the hotel's hospitality-first approach, creating an atmosphere that feels more like discovering a gem than grabbing coffee between obligations.

My stay at the Gunter hotel was phenomenal, the renovated rooms are absolutely comfortable and welcoming. My room was clean, tidy, and on time ready for my arrival. The spot that this hotel is located at is actually perfect and a bookmark for my future trips due to having TWO restaurant options to grab myself a quick cup of coffee to go along with pastries so it’s a total PLUS on my end. Business trips are always the easiest when I can confide the team with my car, Raymond, our valet driver ensured the safe keep of my car and eased the experience for me and asked all of the questions I had. Truly a pleasure to get to meet welcoming staff who make my business trip a delight! I appreciate Raymond and his help, putting in some amazing work.

Stayed for a weekend. The staff were very kind and helpful. Answered any questions. The hotel lobby had charm, room was spacious, got a grande king room. There’s water bottle fill stations and water bottles provided in room. Loved the cool option to use the record player and check out stuff in the record library. The bed was very comfortable. Not the most spacious bathroom area but I still liked it for what I needed. They have a steamer for clothes instead of an iron and ironing board. Also have a full length mirror in the room. The bar in the lobby is a fun way to start the night. They have a Paris Baguette Bakery attached that’s accessible from inside the lobby. The location is really close to the riverwalk. Went there every single day I was there. I’m actually glad we didn’t pick a place right on the river, or else it could’ve been too loud, but this was perfect. There is onsite parking, but for a fee. Unsure how much as I didn’t have to park there.

Beautiful historic hotel. Loved the elegant lobby and central bar. The hotel was previously a Sheraton (I think) and has inherited some of the negative reviews. It underwent major renovations several months ago and is now classed as a Marriott Tribute Hotel. Pet friendly, which I appreciate. Check in was frustrating. You can check in online in advance and select a mobile key, but it serves no purpose. You still have to physically check in at reception because, even after the renovations, online check in doesn’t work. Love the concept of the vinyl library. Keep in mind the music is quite loud and the incense is overpowering, but it is still a cool vibe. Lobby bar is great. Good service, with well-priced drinks. The vinyl library was meant to have someone working there but we had to wait 20 minutes for them to show up. No one there in the morning to take back the records, so we left them with reception. No big deal. Rooms are lovely and well appointed. Shower/toilet (no bath) room with a single sink outside. Shower was warm, but not hot. There is a steam press, fridge, coffee maker, vinyl player, couch. Very comfortable beds. The doors slam shut, which gets old quickly. Soft close was overlooked during the renovation! There is a much quieter vibe, being just off the River Walk. Never had breakfast in the restaurant, but love the Paris Baguette on site. Parking is an outrageous $60. I parked overnight in the Travis Plaza Garage (across the street) for less than $25 (Spot Hero). I’m not sure Bonvoy status was recognized (may have missed it). For $200 a night I think it is worth it, but there are a few kinks to work out. I would stay again.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Gunter Hotel. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this property is something special. One of the standout features is the vinyl library. You can check out up to three records to play in your room, and each room is thoughtfully equipped with a record player. It’s such a fun, unique touch. Another detail I loved: no bulky ironing board taking up space. Instead, a steamer is neatly tucked into a drawer near the restroom, practical and smart. The rooms themselves are spacious, beautiful, and incredibly comfortable. The renovation is absolutely stunning and strikes a perfect balance between historic charm and modern luxury. Even before stepping inside, we were met with warmth from the valet team. Despite the cold weather, they were incredibly inviting, welcoming, and set the tone for the level of hospitality we experienced throughout our stay. The true highlight for our group, though, was the staff. Due to the storm, the hotel was operating with a skeleton crew made up of leadership team members who stepped in so their line employees could stay home safely and avoid dangerous road conditions. That level of care for their team speaks volumes. We were warmly greeted by the Food and Beverage director, Chef Sarah, and received personal, attentive service at the lobby bar from Nicholle, the Director of Outlets. She shared a fascinating story behind one of their signature cocktails, Do Not Disturb, which ties into the history of Room 636. The gin-based drink was delicious, featured egg whites, muttled raspberrries, and was beautifully presented. The only other line employee we met during our stay was Ingrid, who took exceptional care of us in the restaurant. She cheerfully explained that she was able, and happy to work because she lives close to the hotel. Her positivity and attentiveness truly enhanced our dining experience. We felt like honored guests. The care and intention shown toward both guests and staff alike is remarkable. A special shoutout to Gibby as well, conveniently located near the lobby bar, he provided great service with a tasteful music selection and gave us tutroial on how to use the record player for when we got to our room. Overall, we were completely blown away. The Gunter Hotel delivers not just a beautiful stay, but a memorable, heartfelt experience. Highly recommend.

I was pleasantly surprised by how charming and luxurious this hotel was. I booked it last-minute for an industry conference in town and couldn’t have been more lucky. The location is awesome with a few really nice places right by and also close to river walk access. The Tribute hotels within Marriott are turning out to be some of my favorite offerings, this one certainly contributes to that for me!!! The front desk person told me the hotel just opened within the last few months and services were being added as it got going. I didn’t notice any issues with this. I was disappointed to realize the room they gave me had a window with opaque windows, I was able to open them to see why, an interior view of HVAC equipment and a roof area. Not great, opaque windows are fine for a short stay, but if you can get an exterior facing room it would be a much better experience. The room finishes were really great, the marble on the bathroom really nice and seemed to be used other places like the lobby bar. The bathroom fixtures were also noticeably high quality and well installed. One weird thing I experienced was that the hot water didn’t get as hot as you would expect. It was just warm enough for a comfortable shower, but I think some people that like their showers hot would be disappointed. The hotel should be able to fix this pretty easily. Sort of a similar story with the room thermostat, it read 69 the entire time I was there even though I changed the point to 74, it never budged from 69. Weird, and sort of annoying too. The record player idea is really cool even though I’m not actually into that kind of thing, but I love the creativity and concept. My rooms record player didn’t seem to work, but I didn’t try very hard to make it work so not sure if there was some obvious thing I was doing wrong.
