Crema's Take
“Madcap has been a Grand Rapids cornerstone since 2013, earning its reputation through unwavering consistency and a buzzing atmosphere filled with natural light that keeps regulars coming back year after year. Their espresso program shines through signature seasonal creations like the Nakatomi Plaza and thoughtfully curated flight selections, while the knowledgeable service and laptop-friendly vibe make it equally suited for a solo work session or meeting with friends. With an impressive 4.6-star rating across nearly 600 reviews, this is the kind of specialty coffee destination that lives up to the hype—though you'll want to come early since this place is genuinely always full.”

I’d heard that Madcap was a must-visit coffee shop in Grand Rapids, so I made it my first stop when I got into town. I ordered their seasonal drink, the Nakatomi Plaza, and wow, what a surprise! After a little while , they called my name. I went up, and there was this little thing on top of my drink that looked like a Pog from back in the day, with “yippe ki yi yay” written on it. I can’t recall if it said MFer or not, like in the movie. I think it just said “yippie ki yi yay” because it’s a family-friendly place. Then they told me, “We’re going to light this on fire now. Please let it burn completely before you take your drink away because this flaming piece of edible rice paper tends to blow away, and we don’t want the place to catch fire.” I had no idea what to expect, so I said, “Hell yeah!” They torched it. I watched it burn. I warmed my hands in the flames as it burned out. Then I took it to my seat and drank it. It was delicious, and the burnt bits tasted like toasted marshmallows. I loved the experience, and I think everyone had a blast watching my flaming drink burn brightly. I can honestly say I’ve never had anything like this happen at a coffee shop before, and I enjoyed every second of it. I would love to return someday.
Awesome experience every time, got the flight this time and thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as the customer service!
Been my go to spot everything I’m in Grand Rapids! Been going to this place since 2013 and it still has the same consistency, probably better I would say! I love madcap! Highly recommended to the coffee lovers!!
It’s a happening place. Full of people. Clean and neat. Nice vibe. I ordered a latte, and while it’s cute, the taste seems “off”. I gave it a 3 because everything else was good, but if the coffee experience is not great, then does the rest really matter? Also, was expensive compared to the multiple GREAT coffee shops we visited in Holland Mi. There is paid parking right in front, or free street parking on Dennis.
There is a reason this location is always busy. Great coffee, better service, and a lot of natural light. I do wish they would return to their pre-pandemic hours (I was often there 'til before close). But I am so grateful I live nearby and can grab some espresso beans or a quality cup of coffee on a morning walk or settle in on a rainy day to read a book or work remotely. Keep it up, y'all!
