Crema's Take

Sun House Cafe is a matcha-focused destination that's earned a devoted following for their seasonal creations, particularly their ube matcha latte which reviewers rave about as a standout. Their signature banana cream matcha divides opinions—some praise the balanced banana flavor and textural elements, while others find it inconsistent—though their traditional matcha latte lands solidly around a 7/10. Fair warning: the welcoming factor seems hit-or-miss, and they operate card-only, so come prepared and with an open mind about what might be a quieter, more no-frills aesthetic.

The banana flavor was definitely there, not overly sweet and the crunchy bits are a nice addition. I feel like the matcha was a bit watery and definitely fell short of silky & smooth. Probably wouldn’t go out of the way to return.

The drink itself (banana cream matcha) was fine. The interior was unwelcoming. The staff were stand-offish. No cash/card-only payments can be seen as discriminatory. I am not a matcha girl so I won't be a regular but as a to-go order it's tasty, though a little expensive at $7. Consistency is a problem too --all photos of this drink had a crumbly topping (nuts?) but mine had none.

I visited Sun House Cafe in Sacramento and tried their delicious Banana Creme Matcha & Mocha Expresso! The matcha flavor is smooth and rich, and the banana crème adds a subtle sweetness without overpowering the tea. My husband really enjoyed the mocha with three shots of espresso. The balance between the earthy matcha and creamy banana was really lovely. The cafe itself is cozy and welcoming, and the staff were friendly.

Short review: Good matcha. 7/10 for their regular matcha latte. 20/10 for their seasonal ube matcha latte. Will come back for it👹 Mid banana cream matcha, probably a 4/10 for me. Wouldn’t order it again (I’m not a fan of banana drinks). Long review: I’ve passed by this cafe so many times on my way to the gym and finally took the time to stop during their open hours, and it’s so worth it!! They have a diverse drink menu with coffees and matchas. My first time I got the banana cream matcha and a regular matcha latte for my friend (which I tried of course). I tried banana cream matcha for the first time in San Jose and have been chasing that flavor ever since, and while Sunhouse was good, it’s unfortunately not the replacement I was hoping for. I liked the crunchy bits they add to the top! I wouldn’t order it again personally, but I’m also not the biggest banana person. Definitely worth a try if you like banana!! 4/10 If I’m too lazy and don’t wanna make my matcha latte at home, the regular matcha latte would be a solid choice. You can’t go wrong; it’s a 7/10 for me! My second visit I ordered ube matcha latte. I love ube treats and have had ube with coffee before, but not with matcha so I wanted to give it a try. The ube cream top is amazingly good and the perfect flavor. I slowly sipped at my drink to really take all the ube in, and eventually let the ube cream mix more with the matcha, and I love the flavors together!! Highly recommend this seasonal drink if you like ube, and I’d rate it a 20/10. Would absolutely go back again for this drink😆 I can’t wait to try their coffees as well! Note that its a small cafe with benches for seating/waiting, and a countertop to stand and sip. I wouldn’t personally sit and hang out with the limited space but I saw people vibing so🤷🏻‍♀️ My wait time for my drinks the first visit on a weekend afternoon was a bit longer. There was a line of people ahead and behind me, but the line was totally managable and the staff made the drinks within 5-8 minutes. My second time was on a weekday morning so it was very chill with a few people coming and leaving. Like another review said, the cafe has a carton of “premade” matcha, AKA they probably mix and ration the matcha with the milk the morning of or the day before. I personally don’t mind this since it generally means the matcha has already been portioned and you can count on the matcha flavor being consistent with each visit - It’s the worst when you go somewhere and have a good drink, then order it again another day and the flavor is off. I can also see how making the matcha beforehand helps with the wait time, which have been god awful at all matcha cafes ever since the surge in popularity. I’ve seen other cafes do this and don’t see an issue.

This spot has been on my list of places to visits for matcha. Especially since it’s come up on my FYP quite a lot. I had high hopes for the banana matcha late, but not sure if it fell short because I recently had a really amazing matcha the day before or if the sight of premade matcha in a large gallon sized container threw me off. You can literally see the matcha sediment at the bottom of the jug. The banana flavor was definitely there, not overly sweet and the crunchy bits are a nice addition. I feel like the matcha was a bit watery and definitely fell short of silky & smooth. Probably wouldn’t go out of the way to return.
