The Alchemist
1660 Bellefontaine St, Indianapolis, IN
Crema's Take
“Tucked just outside downtown Indianapolis, The Alchemist draws coffee lovers with its modern, beautifully designed interior and solid espresso foundations, though it shines brightest when you catch it at the right moment—expect thoughtfully crafted specialty drinks and a comfortable space perfect for lingering with a laptop. The atmosphere and aesthetic earn consistent praise, but service can be inconsistent, so your experience might depend on timing and staffing, but when things click, the excellent coffee and inviting vibe make it worth the visit.”

I was DYING to try The Alchemist… and I’m going to be super honest. I left feeling a little disappointed. Maybe it was just the timing — they had some kind of event going on when I went, so service wasn’t the best. It felt a little chaotic and things took longer than expected. BUT I will say, the staff did apologize and really tried to make it right, which I appreciated. That alone is why I’ll be going back soon. Now let’s talk about the food… In my opinion, it was super overpriced for what I got. I literally looked at it and thought, “I could’ve made this at home for way less… and probably more of it too.” It just felt a little underwhelming for the price point. BUT — the coffee? 👏🏽 I had the orange dark chocolate latte and it was SO good. Like actually memorable. Rich, balanced, not overly sweet. That drink saved the experience for me. And the vibe? 10/10. Definitely a spot to be in. The atmosphere is cool, aesthetic, and somewhere you’d want to sit and hang out. So overall: Food – not impressed (especially for the price) Service – rough that day, but they handled it well Coffee – amazing Vibe – top tier I’m giving it another shot soon because I really want to love it. Honest review 🤎
The food and atmosphere was amazing, but the staff was pretty rude and spacey. We asked for things like an extra napkin and our waitress rolled her eyes. We had to ask for our checks and boxes multiple times.
I stopped by during a Christmas trip to Indianapolis, and unlike how it looks from the outside, the interior was beautiful and the coffee was excellent. Since it was close to their break time, we didn’t have much time and couldn’t stay long, but it’s a really nice place where you can sit back and relax when you have more time. Next time, I’ll make sure to check the break time before visiting.
A cool coffee spot just outside of downtown Indy, about a 5-minute drive from Mass Ave. The cafe has a modern vibe with nice interiors and comfortable seating. Parking is available at the rear of the building, which is a plus. The coffee was good as well. Will recommend for anyone looking for a quieter alternative to the downtown area.
It was super cute inside. We weren't greeted when we walked in but was greeted at the counter when placing our order. We stopped in after volunteering at a church down the street. I ordered a carmel hot chocolate. I wasn't too impressed with the flavor. I later purchased two bottles of tea. I drank one today and wasn't impressed either. The bottles were $7 each.
