Crema's Take

Phlour is a neighborhood gem where serious sourdough craftsmanship meets a bright, airy gathering space that feels equally suited to a solo coffee ritual or catching up with friends. Their pastries are genuine showstoppers—reviewers rave about croissants with real heft and flavor, cardamom buns, and chocolate chip cookies that inspire people to stop mid-bite and tell others about them. It's the kind of place locals return to weekly for the baked goods and traditional coffee drinks, where the slow, convivial atmosphere makes you want to linger.

This is my go to bakery for my weekly sourdough, and am here frequently getting pastries or drinks. Their sourdough is some of the best i have had, with a such a nice outer crunch and that tangy flavor. They have great pastries, some of my personal favorites being the cinnamon rolls (so soft), pretzels (weekend exclusive) and their ham/cheese croissants. Its hard to go wrong with any choices though. They have rotating unique bread, like japanese milk bread, flavored sourdough and some other unique loafs. They also sell their excess bread on a discount the next day and its still fresh. Their drinks are reliable, and most recently tried their eggnog latte and was a big fan of it. I started using their sourdough starter they sell recently and it came out great. The staff is also really friendly and provide helpful guidance to the goods they sell. It’s a nice place to work out of to but just a warning there is not plugs to charge your laptops (that i could find). I love this place! Phlour is for the community and you should come support it!

I found out about this place when I was at a nearby gaming store, and after pHlour closed they took some delicious pastries to the gaming store! I managed to get a chocolate chip cookie and oh my gosh one of the best cookies I've ever had! I went back the next day to get more, they were so good. When I was in town at the gaming store again last weekend I went here looking for more cookies and sadly they were sold out but I grabbed a hot chocolate - and easily one of the best hot chocolates I've had in Chicagoland. The staff was quick with orders, it's a cute place and the other pastries looked delicious also. I can't wait to get another hot chocolate here when I'm in town and hopefully try some more delicious goods!

Live in the neighborhood and love to support local businesses, but I have had two disappointing experiences. Both times I ordered an Americano and chocolate croissants. I’m not sure if it was my timing which was about 11:30 AM but both times the croissant tasted like it was a day old. It was not delicate flaky or even buttery. It literally tasted stale.. If you’re going to charge almost $13 for an Americano and a croissant, a croissant should at least be fresh and not crunchy.

It is rare for me to stop eating after a bite to tell others about food, but the first bite of this ham and cheese croissant is that rare exception. The croissant is huge, often a worrisome sign in pastries where size often substitutes for taste and quality. Not at all the case here. Here the size results from the skills of a baker who created a light, airy, crispy pastry with strong, balanced flavors and all the right textures. I will spare the reader a pic of me and the table covered in croissant flakes, and just encourage you to go find out for yourself. pHlour Bakery and Cafe has spent the past few years in the shadow of the Bryn Mawr CTA station renovation, which has had a big impact on all Bryn Mawr businesses. Now that the station work is done and the CTA station is accessible to all, stop by pHlour and discover or rediscover a real local treasure. The employees are friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere relaxing, and the food is great.

A bright and airy cafe with a lovely wall display of fresh breads and sourdoughs. We tried the cardamom bun, banana crumble, coffee, and picked up a day-old sourdough loaf. The cardamom bun leaned a bit mild in flavor, while the banana crumble was moist, fragrant, and the standout of the visit. The sourdough was slightly stiff but probably made sense given it was day old. Overall, it’s a pleasant stop for baked goods and a casual coffee break.
