Cherry Tree Café
WUSTL, Clayton, MO
Crema's Take
“This casual Clayton spot is beloved for its genuinely warm staff who seem to brighten regulars' days, paired with a solid breakfast menu that keeps people coming back. While they've streamlined their offerings in recent months, Cherry Tree remains a reliable neighborhood gathering place where you can grab a Kaldi's coffee and pastries without pretense—it's the kind of place that hits more often than not, especially if you're an early riser.”

There are dining halls, and then there are institutions. The Bear’s Den is not merely a place to consume calories; it is a social, emotional, and philosophical ecosystem operating at the heart of the South 40. Every swipe of a meal point feels less like a transaction and more like entering a fragile agreement between humanity and chaos. The layout itself resembles a carefully engineered behavioral experiment. One enters with confidence and purpose, only to spend the next fourteen minutes circling every station as though conducting field research for a dissertation titled “The Psychological Effects of Infinite Mid Food Options.” The pasta station tempts you with possibility. The grill station offers certainty. The salad bar exists primarily to reassure you that balance is theoretically achievable. At approximately 11:47 PM on a Tuesday, the Bear’s Den transforms into something almost mythological. Athletes, pre-meds, finance interns, exhausted engineers, and one guy wearing pajama pants and carrying a full gallon of chocolate milk converge in silent mutual understanding. It is perhaps the closest modern society has come to recreating the ancient agora. The All You Care To Eat dinner program deserves special academic consideration. Washington University Dining Services has essentially created a live-action demonstration of supply and demand, greed, hope, and regret all occurring simultaneously near the soft-serve machine. One does not “grab dinner” at Bear’s Den. One commits to an experience whose consequences will unfold over several hours. (WashU Dining) Critics will point to occasional inconsistencies in food quality. These critics fundamentally misunderstand the artistic vision. Bear’s Den is about uncertainty. It forces students to confront impermanence. Some nights the chicken is transcendent. Other nights it appears to have been designed by committee. This is intentional. Growth cannot occur without adversity. Architecturally, the lighting achieves the rare balance of “hospital waiting room” and “luxury airport lounge.” The ambient soundtrack of plates clattering and someone loudly saying “broooo” every seven seconds creates an acoustic landscape unique to WashU culture. Ultimately, Bear’s Den succeeds because it understands the true purpose of college dining: not nourishment, but community. Friendships are formed in the waffle line. Relationships end near the soda machines. Group projects are planned, abandoned, and resurrected over late-night mozzarella sticks. Legends are born here. 5/5. A masterpiece of organized confusion.
Love this place! Employees are so nice and make my day. Love the food, especially breakfast. Yum!
What happened to the sandwiches guys. Cherry Tree used to be good then fell off severely in August 2023. Now their hours are shortened, they only sell pastries, and their ciabatta sandwiches are dead. Dead just like old Cherry Tree. The workers can be hit or miss but usually kind of tired. I can't blame them. RIP Peanut you were a very friendly and efficient employee. The Kaldi's coffee is not the best as it is very watery in taste. RIP to the pumpkin pie and apple cider special of 2023.
One of the better parts of BD! The staff is nice and they have a good variety of treats. Coffee is standard (Kaldi's) and you can order ahead. Their sandwiches are also great, but I wish they were available more often :(!
