Missoula Coffee: Higgins Avenue and the Hip Strip
A river town, a university, and the least self-conscious coffee in Montana
5 min read · August 2026 · By Gabe Petersen
The Quick Shot
Missoula's coffee runs the length of Higgins Avenue, from Butterfly Herbs and Basal downtown, across the Clark Fork to Le Petit Outre on the Hip Strip. Drum roasts on East Broadway and Break Espresso opens at 5:30am. The Railroad District on North 1st has the small rooms worth finding: Floreo, where the owner roasts, and Funk It, which is half thrift store. Crema tracks 70 independent shops in Missoula, chains excluded.
Missoula sits in a valley where five rivers meet, which is why it exists, and it has a university, which is why it has coffee. What separates it from Bozeman three hours east is attitude. Bozeman is a boomtown negotiating with its own growth. Missoula is a mill town that turned into a college town and never got precious about it. The coffee follows from that: fewer design statements, more places that have been in the same room since the 1970s and see no reason to change. Higgins Avenue is the spine, running from the Northside down through downtown, across the Clark Fork on the Higgins bridge, and into the Hip Strip on the south bank. You can walk almost all of it. The Railroad District on North 1st is a two-block detour that holds the two most interesting small operators in town. Bring cash for at least one stop.
Local Grounds
Downtown & North Higgins
The commercial core between the river and the railroad. Bookstores, bars, and the oldest coffee institution in the state. Fully walkable.
The Hip Strip
South Higgins across the bridge. A few blocks of record stores, the Wilma marquee behind you, and the best bakery-café in town.
The Railroad District
North 1st Street West, a couple of blocks off Higgins. Small, owner-operated, and where the newer coffee went.
East Broadway & the Rattlesnake
East along the river toward the Rattlesnake Valley. Residential, quieter, and where the roastery is.
Reserve & Brooks
The west-side commercial corridors. Strip malls and drive-throughs, useful if you are driving through and not otherwise.
Worth the Grind
Barista’s Notes
- 01Butterfly Herbs is cash only. There is an ATM two blocks away but it is easier to arrive prepared.
- 02Break Espresso opens at 5:30am and closes at 10pm daily. If you are catching a dawn float on the Clark Fork or coming off one at dusk, it is the only option at either end.
- 03The Hip Strip is a ten-minute walk from downtown across the Higgins bridge. Do it on foot rather than moving the car, because parking on the south side is worse.
- 04The Railroad District on North 1st West holds both Floreo and Funk It within a block of each other. Two stops, five minutes of walking, and the two most distinctive rooms in town.
- 05Basecamp closes at 1pm and Tandem is closed Monday. Missoula's smaller places keep short weeks, and the good ones sell out rather than restock.
