Tucson Coffee: Where Cartel Started and What Came Next
The origin city. Serious specialty coffee in a desert that earns it.

The Quick Shot
Tucson's specialty coffee runs through Downtown, Fourth Avenue, and the Barrio Histórico. Cartel Roasting Co launched here before becoming a Phoenix institution, Barista del Barrio and Café Desta are essential stops, and Presta Coffee Roasters and Red Captain Coffee Company are what the serious regulars drink. Crema tracks 103 independent shops in Tucson, chains excluded.
Phoenix gets the credit and Tucson gets the origin story. Cartel Roasting Co started here on E Broadway Boulevard before Scottsdale and Tempe and Phoenix adopted it. That pattern of doing the interesting thing first, without the fanfare, describes Tucson's coffee scene accurately. Barista del Barrio has been running community-focused espresso in the Barrio Histórico for years. Café Desta brings Ethiopian coffee to a desert city that turns out to be a genuinely good context for it. Black Crown runs a serious pour-over program on Speedway. Presta is technical and precise in a way that most visitors haven't found yet. Tucson summers are extreme: 107 degrees is not a draft, it's a forecast. The coffee shops have good AC and the cold brew programs are excellent. Treat that as a feature.
Local Grounds
Downtown / Broadway
The urban core and the original home of Cartel Roasting Co. More walkable than most of Tucson. A reasonable base for hitting multiple shops without driving.
Barrio Histórico / Barrio Viejo
One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, just south of downtown. Barista del Barrio belongs here and feels like it. Adobe buildings, murals, and a genuine community ethos.
University / Fourth Avenue
The area around the University of Arizona. Fourth Avenue is the main pedestrian corridor. Café Desta and Presta are accessible from here. Higher foot traffic, but the quality is consistent.
North Tucson / Foothills
Further from downtown but worth it for Red Captain Coffee Company on N Stone Ave. The Catalina Foothills backdrop is excellent. Mornings here from October through April are genuinely pleasant.
Worth the Grind
Barista’s Notes
- 01Tucson is a driving city. The good coffee shops are spread across different neighborhoods. Budget transit time.
- 02May through September: 100-plus degrees is normal. Every good shop has AC and a cold brew program. Use both.
- 03Fourth Avenue and the area around the University of Arizona are walkable. Everywhere else, you need a car.
- 04Tucson has a strong breakfast and brunch culture. Most coffee shops here do food well. Don't skip it.
- 05The Sonoran Desert elevation (2,400 feet) means slightly cooler mornings than Phoenix. Patio seating is genuinely pleasant from October through April.
