Crema's Take

Calas Café is a living piece of New Orleans history where you'll discover the story behind their namesake fried rice cakes—crispy, golden, and served with a silky lemon curd for dipping that keeps people ordering multiple rounds. The coffee here is genuinely excellent, but it's really the whole experience that sets this place apart: knowledgeable staff who share the rich cultural heritage of this traditional Creole dish, a warm family-friendly atmosphere perfect for lingering, and pastries that taste like they were made with real care. It's the kind of spot where you walk in for caffeine and leave having learned something meaningful about New Orleans itself.

Calas Café is a special stop in the heart of New Orleans and a place that really stands out for both its food and its history. This isn’t just somewhere to eat — it’s somewhere you can learn while you’re there. The café is deeply rooted in New Orleans culture, and the focus on calas connects the food directly to the city’s past in a way that feels meaningful, not gimmicky. One thing that really impressed us was how safe and accommodating they were with gluten-free options. Finding genuinely gluten-free food in New Orleans isn’t always easy, but Calas Café took it seriously and made the experience comfortable and stress-free. That level of care made a big difference for us and allowed us to fully enjoy the visit without worry. The atmosphere reflects the spirit of the city — welcoming, authentic, and relaxed. It feels like a place where food, history, and community all come together. Even years later, it’s a stop that sticks with us, and one I’d absolutely return to the next time we’re in New Orleans. If you’re looking for something that goes beyond a typical meal and offers a true sense of place, Calas Café is well worth the visit.

Just one word to describe this place WOW! The calas were the best thing we’ve ever had! Fresh and hot with powdered sugar and a delicious lemon curd for dipping. So very, very, very good! We were blown away by the delicious coffee. It was amazing! And the friendliest and nicest people in the French Quarter.

What a magical experience! Learning the history and rich culture behind the calas was inspiring. I will not spoil it for you, go in for yourself and enjoy the experience. Also the calas are way way way way wayyyyyyy better than beignets 💯💯💯 And literally this is the BEST COFFEE YOU WILL EVER HAVE! (Literally ever!) No sugar or creamer and it tastes absolutely wonderful ❣️ Then the calas; yum yum YUMMMM! Full of flavor and great textures and the lemon sauce on the side ooooo YASSSS 🫶 We found this spot on our second day and I wish we went everyday honestly, we made it there two more times. When I come back to NOLA, I will be getting this coffee everyday and of course some scrumptious calas too. The vibes inside are immaculate because the shop owner has such a vibrant and welcoming aura and is just such a kind and genuine being. Appreciate you! Now go to Calas Cafe and get yourself so calas and coffee ASAPPP :)

An Unforgettable Culinary and Historical Experience My visit to Calas on Decatur was truly a highlight of my trip to New Orleans. While the food itself was incredible, what made the experience so special was the unparalleled service and expertise of Brandon. He was not just a server, but a true expert on the history of the calas. He taught us so much about the origins of this delicious dish and its significant role in the city's history, going beyond just serving a meal. The stories he shared and the passion he had for the food were infectious. The calas themselves were divine, and the coffee was the perfect complement, making for an absolutely amazing culinary experience. Brandon's knowledge and enthusiasm elevated our visit from a simple meal to a fascinating and memorable lesson in New Orleans culture and history. I highly recommend visiting Calas, and if you're lucky enough to be served by Brandon, you're in for a truly unique and enriching experience.
