Crema's Take

Tucked into downtown Salt Lake City, Wanyen Cafe is a charming Thai-owned spot with whimsical yellow wavy walls and a genuinely welcoming vibe that invites you to linger. Their real specialty lies in bold, unapologetic Asian-inspired ice cream flavors—think durian, mango sticky rice, and coconut pudding—where the best versions deliver authentic richness that doesn't hold back. It's the kind of place where friendly staff and a cute, Instagram-worthy interior pair perfectly with creative frozen treats that taste like they actually traveled from Southeast Asia.

Incredible durian ice cream with a rich flavor. The right combination of richness and sweetness without overwhelming. Mango sticky rice lacked coconut flavor and the mango was quite sour. Without a sweet mango, this flavor combo doesn't work. There's no way to make nature cooperate sometimes but there is choice in whether to do the flavor at any point in time. Texture was largely creamy but I did get an ice crystal or two in each flavor.

Such a fun place! I got the coconut pudding thing, and it was really good! It was kinda bland so i do wish they added more coconut, or something to make it more interesting. but overall great experience. The ice cream with sticky rice was amazing!!

Located in downtown Salt Lake City, Wanyen is a charming Asian-flavor ice cream shop opened by a Thai owner! The interior is super cute with yellow wavy walls and orange-white striped awnings, giving off total Thai vacation vibes ~ The highlight is their authentic durian ice cream (Durian available!), plus Thai tea, mango sticky rice, ube, black sesame, and many other handmade flavors—all made fresh with real fruit and no artificial sweeteners. The signature mango sticky rice ice cream plate is amazing, topped with fresh mango and sticky rice, and it's vegan-friendly! They also have Thai tea floats, strawberry parfaits, banana boats, and drinks like butterfly pea lemon soda and pink milk. The space is bright and spacious with large windows for great natural light, and there's even a cute little Christmas tree that's perfect for the holiday season ~ A rare Thai dessert paradise in Salt Lake City—must-visit for who love durian and Southeast Asian flavors!

We visited Wan Yen Cafe and had such a lovely experience from start to finish. We were offered two scoops of ice cream, and I chose the mango sticky rice flavor. It tasted exactly like the name suggests—bright mango, creamy sweetness, and that familiar sticky rice flavor that makes it so comforting. It was genuinely fun to eat, switching between bites from the mango side and the rice side, mixing things up and seeing which flavor came through more with each bite. It was excellent. My scoop also came with a small waffle chip, which added a nice little crunch without overpowering the ice cream. I brought my other half along, and he purchased the Vietnamese, coffee ice cream, which had crumbles mixed in. The texture was spot-on—creamy with just enough crunch to keep it interesting, but not overdone. The shop itself is super cute and feels like a great place to hang out for dessert. You could easily make a full dessert stop here, or just pop in for a mini treat. We went after lunch, and it was the perfect midday sweet break. Ordering is easy—you can use an iPad to place your order if you don’t want to wait in line, or order at the counter and chat with the staff. They also offer samples, which is always appreciated. There’s a rewards system as well, where you earn points as you visit more often. The space was clean, festive, and welcoming. With Pioneer Park right across the street, I can definitely see this place being busy during the spring and summer farmers market season. We actually grabbed our ice cream and walked around the park afterward, enjoying a casual stroll and the Christmas lights—it was such a nice way to wrap up the visit. We’ll absolutely be back, and I truly wish the owner continued success. This is a great addition to the neighborhood.

What a hidden gem! I was surprised when I walked in. I was immediately drawn to the ice cream flavors, as there’s a lot of asian flavors!!! The staff were super welcoming, patient, and friendly. You are allowed 3 samples, so I was able to try durian, mango sticky rice, and roasted sesame. I ended up getting a scoop of banoffee and Vietnamese coffee. My friend got the green tea peppermint and it was soo good!!! Each flavor was so spot on to the original food/beverage it was made by; it was creamy and just so good! Another thing I really enjoyed was that they offer different cone flavors. I got a cocoa flavored waffle cone with my ice cream and it tasted so good!! It’s very nicely decorated for the season right now, but I can definitely see this as a cute date spot or hangout spot with friends. They also serve other sweet treats and drinks that all look so good. I will definitely be coming back with friends in the future!!
