Cafe Express

1800 Market St, Philadelphia, PA

★★★★4.1(21 Google reviews)

Crema's Take

Cafe Express is a beloved neighborhood fixture where the owner's infectious energy genuinely sets the tone—reviewers rave about staff who sing along to the radio and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes this spot perfect for daily regulars and folks needing a quick bite near City Hall. The kitchen keeps prices surprisingly reasonable for the area with hearty comfort food, though quality and portion consistency seem to vary, and it's worth noting they're meat-forward if you have dietary preferences. It's the kind of place where the people behind the counter matter as much as what's in your cup—a true community gathering spot rather than a sterile coffee chain.

Went into the establishment as I did at times to get some soup and other items. Standing in line, the cashier starts to sing a song that was playing on the radio (said she owns the business). Singing, she distracted me as I gave her my money for my items which came out to be $16 and some change. I gave her the exact change all but a $1. I had a $5 bill in my hand I thought I gave to her while waiting on my change. In a very nasty tone, she says “you no owe me a $1”. I was confused cause I thought I gave her everything. She accused me of being a thief and told me that complimenting her on her singing (cause I had complimented her) , I was trying to steal a $1. I have enough money of my own to own her restaurant so it was an insult and totally unprofessional to make an accusation such as that over a $1. If I were trying to steal, I wouldn’t have stood there waiting for change. And don’t know if it was just me or does she react to everyone this way. I don’t know if it was a racist act or something else going on this day but that day, they lost a customer!!

If you want to spend $7 on a breakfast sandwich that is smaller than a hockey puck, then by all means go here. Otherwise, you’ll get a bigger meal for cheaper anywhere else

A really nice spot to go for a quick grab and go lunch if you work at one of the offices in the Two Penn Center. Prices are competitive if not less than the local eateries or even the franchise chains here. Great service and staff as well.

Go spend the extra few bucks elsewhere and avoid this place at all costs. Especially If you dont eat meat. Every time I buy an egg and cheese I find bacon or sausage on it. I have told them many times about this but the staff is so burnt out and in lala land. OH and the pasta salad I purchased today, it is covered in MOLD. Run fast and don't spend your money here. And when I figure out how to post the photos I will.
