Crema's Take

Nestled in Boulder with a sunny courtyard that hosts live music on Sunday mornings, Spruce Confections shines as a gathering spot where generosity matches quality—staff like Aurelia go out of their way to make guests feel welcomed. Their gluten-free baked goods are genuinely exceptional (the cinnamon bread is worth the trip alone), though recent reviews suggest the pastry program has been inconsistent, so call ahead if you're making a special trip.

I had a great experience with Aurelia! I set up my new phone recently and couldn't get my card to work so she offered me a coffee for free. What a lovely gesture! Great service!

I'm so sad to watch Spruce become a shell of its former self. The pastries have gone way downhill, gotten smaller, and it's a crapshoot what's actually being stocked. I keep coming back hoping it was just a fluke but after this last time today when even the coffee was an issue I think I'm done.

Not only does Spruce Confections have yummy food (burritos, sweet confections) and delicious drinks (coffee, juices, etc.); every Sunday from 9:30-11:30 there is joyful music in the sweet courtyard on the side. A great band—string instruments and singing—has been playing for the last 15 years (and who I just recently discovered). Old time jazz and tunes that make your feet tap and your head nod. Great folks and fun atmosphere! Following is the Spruce Confections off of North Broadway, In Boulder This tiny, intimate Cafe reminds me of something from a movie of a place that was in the middle of nowhere, even though this is surrounded by all kinds of sweet little shops for coffee and pastries, etc. My friend chose this place because she says they have the best pastries around. I chose a shortbread cookie with chocolate chips that was as tasty and fresh as it sounds. The art on the walls are done by a local artist and the oil paintings pop out with vibrancy that welcome you into the tiny little shop. The employees are decorated with tattoos and friendly and helpful, especially since we blew in from the street on a very blustery day! I could’ve easily spent the entire morning there and crowds of people entered and left and with the atmosphere, so entirely comfortable, like you’re sitting in your best friend’s kitchen, chatting to save the world with your best friend over Blueberry tea. You are saving yourself as your friend saves herself, which really is the beginning of a great relationship with the Earth, time and everyone else.

Smelled delicious in there and I can’t speak for their confections, so if you’re going for something besides coffee, maybe ignore my review. But I ordered a latte and it was not a latte. As a former college barista (weren’t we all 🤷🏼‍♀️) I can say that she likely just stuck the steam wand in and straight up boiled the milk, the ratio of espresso to milk to foam was way off.. basically watery, overcooked milk, no foam. The price was a few dollars less than the downtown Boulder coffees, but that doesn’t really count for anything if you have no interest in finishing the drink. The three stars are to acknowledge that the lady who made the coffee was extremely sweet and friendly, and the fact that they offer a nice selection of gluten free options (again, didn’t get any, but it is nice to offer!) Layout of the shop is a bit awkward, but there is outdoor seating and plenty of parking since it’s in the newly developing NoBo “arts district “

The best packaged gluten free cakes and breads I've ever tasted. I wish we had this where I live, or that they offered mail order, because it would be worth every dime. I had the cinnamon bread, mocha chip bread, and chocolate zucchini bread. All win.
