Crema's Take
“Bunny Bakes is a soul-filled Squirrel Hill bakery where the pastries taste as genuine as the welcome you'll receive from staff like Rachel, Griffin, and Joe—each interaction feels like walking into someone's kitchen rather than a transaction. Their creative specialty drinks and thoughtfully crafted baked goods (think snickerdoodles and fudge brownies that live up to the hype) justify the premium pricing, and the whole operation carries the warm legacy of its namesake, Bernita "Bunny" Buncher, making it feel like a place that was baked with actual heart.”

This place is truly Awesome. Capital A. I don’t throw that around lightly. Rachel, Griffin, and Joe were working while I was there, and all three of them were genuinely warm and welcoming. Not in a corporate-script “have a great day” kind of way, but in a real, curious, human way. They actually wanted to know who I am. You can feel the difference. The coffee was fantastic. I got a specialty latte that somehow tasted like dessert without drowning out the coffee. It was definitely sweet, but the espresso still showed up, which is a balance a lot of places miss. The baked goods looked incredible too. Tragically, I had to abstain. Doctor’s orders. Yes, I already bent the rules with the latte. We are moving forward. But here’s the part that stuck with me. I was diagnosed with Autism later in life, and it kind of turned my world upside down in a good way. It gave me language for things I have been navigating forever. I have spent most of my life adapting to environments that were not built with me in mind. I have never, not once, been in a place that had table toppers openly addressing sensory needs and offering help adjusting lighting or volume. I actually just sat there looking at it for a minute. Since my diagnosis, I have adopted a sort of creed. “I will adapt to survive, but I will not confuse survival with consent. Adaptation keeps me alive; accommodation lets me live.” Sitting in a place like this, where accommodation is not an afterthought, hit me harder than I expected. And here is what sealed it. The staff were not just polite. They were happy. Engaged with each other and with customers in a way that felt real. It felt like a place where people are allowed to live. Ruthann and the management team clearly care about what they are building here. A lot of places claim inclusivity because it sounds good. This place quietly delivers on it. In a world that seems to thrive on ugly, that matters. I am going to go back to my headphones now and just exist.
There are bakeries… and then there are places that feel like they were baked with a soul. Bunny Bakes is one of those places. We walked in and basically made the only reasonable decision: take one of everything. The cinnamon and chocolate rugelach? Soft, rich, and just the right amount of indulgent without feeling heavy. The poppyseed hamantaschen… deep, nostalgic, and somehow comforting in a way that makes you slow down mid-bite. And then there was the coffee. I took the Mendy Latte… and gave it a little upgrade, let’s just say we turned it into the “Mendy Latte on steroids.” Smooth, strong, and exactly what you want when you’re settling into a quiet, thoughtful space. The scone deserves its own mention, perfect texture, not too dry (which is basically a miracle in the scone world), and just sweet enough to keep you going back for another bite. But here’s the part that stays with you: The space is calm, inviting, and unpretentious. Plenty of seating, a quiet vibe, and a menu with great vegan options and just so happens to be kosher. And behind it all is something deeper, this isn’t just a bakery, it’s a mission. A place run for adults with special needs. Very meaningful. You don’t just leave full. You leave feeling like something meaningful just happened. And honestly… that might be the best ingredient of all.
Wow. I lived in and still work in the Bay Area where you might see comparable prices. The difference is that the quality matches most times. My $6 muffin was frozen inside which, I’m not even sure how you do that? Maybe moving them from a different location on a cold winter morning? Regardless, charge high prices but make sure the product matches. Do better. ✌🏻
I had heard from an excellent source that I had to come try their baked goods! I was not disappointed with my delicious snickerdoodle and fudge brownie. That staff made the experience great by being friendly and excited to share stories when they weren't helping other customers. I have been recommending it to my friends to try.
Bunny Bakes in Squirrel Hill is an absolute gem! This warm, welcoming bakery is named after Bernita “Bunny” Buncher, whose legacy of inclusion is beautifully reflected in everything they do. Their mission shines through the moment you walk in—an accessible, supportive environment where adults of all abilities are valued and empowered. The baked goods are exceptional (and kosher pareve!), and their coffee and drinks are dairy and Cholov Yisroel, making this a perfect stop for anyone seeking high-quality treats with thoughtful certification. I have to shout out my personal order: the Honey Bunny Latte. It’s smooth, sweet, and truly a must-try! If you’re in Squirrel Hill, Bunny Bakes is a spot you need to experience. Warm people, amazing mission, and delicious food—what more could you want? 💛🐰
