Crema's Take

Nestled in New Haven, this casual neighborhood spot serves up generous, budget-friendly breakfasts like cinnamon swirl pancakes and creative burritos in a cozy, unpretentious setting that feels like a local's secret. The tight tables and no-frills counter service keep things informal and intimate—perfect for lingering over coffee with friends or settling in solo with a pastry, though it's best approached with relaxed expectations rather than fine dining ambitions. Regulars swear by the warm, homey atmosphere and honest prices, making it a genuine neighborhood gathering place rather than just another cafe.

Upon walking it, I though it would be a cute little place to have a quick breakfast. The girl behind the counter seemed impatient as we decided what we wanted, but we ordered and sat down. I got a vanilla iced coffee and it had no vanilla or coffee flavor to it at all, I would have thought it was water if it wasn't for the color. Then it took 45 minutes for two breakfast sandwiches and one order of plain hashbrowns. Mind you there were less than 10 people in the entire place, also since its an open kitchen you can hear the staff yelling orders around like it was an episode of Hell's Kitchen. We had to change our order to a to-go one since they took so long. All that wait for less than mediocre food. Not sure how this place has over 3 stars, let alone 4.

Not a great spot for a quiet hearty breakfast. Staff girl was nice, order at the counter, then seat yourself. No utensils unless you ask for them (cheap plastic). Tables are small, chairs are awful loud metal stools. Ordered Cowgirl burrito, barely had any steak in it, was mostly egg and peppers. Burrito is hard on both sides (grilled), not soft like it should be. Bagel was barely toasted, a glob of cream cheese on one half, had to spread it with coffee stirrer. Not very filling. Wouldn't come back here.

We chose this place because of its high rating. Absolutely no idea why it has one. We got the bacon and tomato breakfast burrito, the piggy breakfast burrito and the French toast. All were so mediocre we didn’t have it in us to finish them. The tomato burrito particularly was sloppy and falling apart. French toast dry and chewy. It’s saving grace is the relatively low prices, but they are still high enough to expect good food. Disappointing.

Fantastic prices and very good food in a cozy environment! We came here when The Pantry was too busy just up the street and it was surprisingly calm here. We had the cinnamon swirl pancake for only $3 - a great deal! We also had a egg/cheese bun, grilled breakfast burrito, and tuna sandwich (which my friend said was everything they ever hoped for in a tuna sandwich).
