Subterranean Coffee
1237 Prospect St SUITE V, La Jolla, CA
Crema's Take
“Tucked below street level in La Jolla, this cozy spot pulls off the rare feat of being equally welcoming whether you're settling in with your laptop for hours or grabbing a quick Vietnamese coffee to go. The coffee is genuinely excellent and the acai bowls are a highlight, but what keeps people coming back is the peaceful, inviting atmosphere and the owner's genuine warmth that makes even a quick visit feel personal. Dog-friendly and window-seat perfect, it's the kind of neighborhood gem that rewards a little wandering to discover.”

I was in town traveling from LA and was craving an acai bowl. Found this cute place down the street from the farmers market I was at and figured why not give it a go. They had good ratings. First and foremost parking is a pain. Just like anywhere in this area but figured it would be worth it cause it was so highly recommended. When we first got there we really had to use the bathroom so we asked for the restroom key. The guy was pretty hesitant and asked if we were gonna buy something. I kind of chuckled and I said yeah I am but we have to really use the restroom. He reiterated that bathrooms are for customers and I must buy something. Like... Okay dude, I understand and I am going to buy something. But also the bathrooms were completely trashed and disgusting so spending $15 to use this horrendous restroom really wasn't a deal. But I was going to buy something regardless. Anyways.. I ordered the unicorn pitaya bowl because I've never had pitaya. Normally at these kinds of places I get acai but I wanted to try something different. Ordered the bowl, no with coconut and went to sit outside. The bowl came out and although the fruit was pretty fresh the pitaya base was very much frozen and not blended well. You can see in the photos that it was very clumpy and I had to break apart the base in order to eat the bowl. Luckily I didn't have to pay a visit to my dentist. However, I won't be coming back here again. And I'll be making a phone call to my bank to dispute this charge. Go somewhere else. This place is not worth it.
We had Açaí bowl & turkey bri sandwiche 😋😋😋😋😋😋 the owner is friendly & provided us great service, cute little joint in La Jolla
The scenery was peaceful and beautiful. The service was inviting and natural. The coffee was perfect! I would love to come back and sit by the window to enjoy some coffee at this shop. One coffee was $5, and there was nothing wrong with it 😊 They even have ACAI bowls
Hubby and I went Subterranean Coffee for Brunch and we absolutely loved it! Coffee was so tasty and the food was delicious! I definitely recommend trying their acai bowls! So refreshing and filling for sure 🙏🏼
I was visiting La Jolla and walking to a coffee shop I seen online to try. However, as I was walking I saw a sign with a menu for this coffee shop. I seen “Vietnamese coffee” which is my favorite. So I figured I’d detour and check it out. It’s a very cute little shop. I was hesitant if I was going to by anything. Upon walking in, the owner Gene, was putting up air fresheners. We started chatting and his personality and friendliness made me inclined to try his coffee. There are these super cute/funny greeting cards for sale and some cool air fresheners made by his friend. Overall, coffee was delicious and atmosphere and customer service was fantastic. I will definitely go back! Thank you Gene and hope to see this coffee shop as successful as it deserves!!
