Early Bird Biscuit Company

Crema's Take
“Early Bird Biscuit Company is a charming Richmond spot with genuine vintage character that draws people in for more than just coffee—the warm, artfully decorated space feels like stepping into a well-loved community gathering place. While reviews are split on their biscuits themselves, the made-from-scratch approach and delightful pastries keep folks coming back, especially those willing to brave the occasional crowd for that cozy, character-filled experience.”

Love the vibe!! Drove 30 minutes because I was craving a good biscuit and gravy. Decided to check this cool place out. The pastries are delicious. The biscuits were mid at best. Super dry a bit dense and lacking flavor. Not buttery, and needed a bit of salt. The gravy, again needed salt and something?? All I tasted was heavy sage (love that), and cayenne, way too much of it. I added salt and it helped. The Country ham biscuit was good. The Bacon potato cheese was really disappointing. It had 3 skinny bacon half’s, very little cheese and the hash brown was very pale and soft. Needed a little more cook time. The staff were awesome, the place it’s just a great vibe!! Will probably try again, hopefully just a bad day.
I absolutely loved Early Bird Biscuit Company. The environment alone is worth the visit — delightful, warm, and full of character. The space is decorated with vintage early-1900s artwork, much of it featuring dogs, which gives the place a really charming, unexpected personality. There’s also an old National cash register and an apothecary-style glass cabinet for the bakery items that make it feel timeless and thoughtfully curated. The food was excellent. I had a huge biscuit stacked with two pieces of sausage and egg, and everything tasted genuinely made from scratch — because it clearly is. The biscuit was substantial, flavorful, and perfectly balanced, not just big for the sake of being big. What really ties it all together is the staff. Everyone was pleasant, happy, and clearly enjoying what they do. You can feel the joy they put into making the biscuits, and that energy carries straight through to the customer experience. Early Bird Biscuit Company is one of those places that gets everything right: atmosphere, food, and people. A true Richmond gem.
We really wanted to like Early Bird Biscuit Co., but the experience just didn’t live up to the hype. Once inside, it was slightly busy and there was nowhere to stand and wait for food without being in the way. The space is tiny, chaotic, and confusing for a first-time customer. We had no idea where to order, and when we hesitated, a lady with purple hair just rolled her eyes and offered no direction before walking away. Not exactly welcoming. The prices were shocking. One sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit was $9. Pastries were also expensive. For $36 (with a tip that was prompted), we only got two biscuits and two small pastries. That’s a lot for what we received. Unfortunately, the food didn’t justify the cost. The biscuit was huge (around 5x5), which is a plus, and it had a nice buttery flavor. But it was very dry. The sausage was the real issue. It had so much gristle that it was hard to eat. It honestly ruined the sandwich. The pastries were overpriced and very average. The Ube White Chocolate crescent was extremely dry, like a sponge, with just one thin hard line of white chocolate inside. The Ube éclair wasn’t even an éclair. It looked like a small dense donut cut in half with some filling poured in the middle. The filling had a great flavor, but for the price, it was underwhelming. Outside of the cashier, who was pleasant, the rest of the customer facing staff didn't seem friendly at all. They made us feel like an inconvenience just for being there. The one real positive is that the biscuits are massive. If you enjoy them and can get past the gristly sausage, it’s definitely a full meal. Overall, between the high prices, dry food, unfriendliness we will find another spot to find the best biscuit in town.
Where was the flavor? It wasn’t in the biscuit or the fried chicken sandwiched between. I, however, found it in the pickles. They were the only part that actually tasted good. The texture of the biscuit wasn’t bad, but it hardly tasted of anything. And the chicken seemed like it was pulled out of a bag of frozen Tyson fried chicken. The presentation of the restaurant is cute and interesting, but what would Paul Hollywood say?: “It’s got to taste good too.”
Loved their biscuits! Freshly made in house from scratch. They even grate butter right at the counter for Baking. Everything tastes so good! The line can be long and it can be a bit tight inside if you're there during "high" traffic time, but people are genuinely nice, patient, and the workers are efficient so the line moves pretty quickly. Will definitely return!
