Black Hand Coffee
3101 Patterson Ave, Richmond, VA
Crema's Take
“This Richmond gem strikes that sweet spot between serious espresso craftsmanship and welcoming neighborhood hangout, with a dog-friendly outdoor patio that's genuinely worth lingering on. The real draw is their specialty drinks—particularly a standout dirty chai with serious spice—paired with surprisingly affordable, homestyle breakfast items that feel like they were made in someone's kitchen rather than a cafe. Fair warning though: quality can vary from visit to visit, so you might want to build a relationship with the baristas to dial in your perfect cup.”

Cheers to the first Monday of 2026! This is a nice little spot and the coffee is premium.
I really enjoy this location and the café overall, but the drinks are just too inconsistent from visit to visit. Whether it’s flavor, milk ratio, or temperature, I never quite know what I’m going to get. My polite suggestion would be to have someone in place long-term who can maintain consistent standards and procedures. This place has so much going for it, but I can’t imagine I’m the only one noticing this inconsistency, and I worry it will eventually catch up. The food is fine. I appreciate that they use real eggs for the sandwiches - that’s a huge win, since not many comparable places do. The bagels, though, could use some improvement. That said, for a local neighborhood café, the sandwiches work. I just really hope they get a better handle on the drinks.
I think I may have just found my new favorite coffee shop in Richmond! First off, compared to other coffee spots in the area, this place is so affordable. For a French muffin with sausage and egg, a bagel with sausage, and two drinks, we spent just $20! At a lot of other cafes, breakfast and drinks for two can easily run close to $40, so this was such a pleasant surprise. The shop itself is absolutely adorable. Warm, welcoming, and with plenty of seating both inside and out. The menu is simple and to the point, and I mean that as a huge compliment. You can tell every single item was chosen with care and made with quality in mind. Now, the food… oh my goodness. The bagels are to die for, I don’t know if they’ve sprinkled magic into the everything bagels or what, but they were incredible. My husband had the French muffin and couldn’t stop raving about it. My matcha latte was perfect, and my coffee-snob husband said the coffee was excellent too. And the outdoor seating area? Just such a vibe. Relaxing, charming, and the perfect spot to sip your drink and enjoy the day. If you’re in Richmond, you absolutely have to stop by Black Hand Coffee. It’s the perfect combination of great prices, delicious food, excellent drinks, and a cozy, friendly atmosphere. I can’t wait to go back!
The dirty chai is impeccable, very spicy. I also had a sausage egg n cheese on an English muffin that honestly tasted like a home cooked one. Outdoor patio is dog friendly and an absolute vibe. The inside is a little small but they’ve done a great job optimizing the space they have!
Great little treasure inside of the city, right outside our airBnB. Staff was friendly and helpful with great suggestions. Cutely decorated and the coffee was delicious! Breakfast was yummy also, they were out of some items but the bacon egg and cheese bagels were really good and fresh.
