Crema's Take

Wayfarer Bread & Pastry is a beloved La Jolla bakery where the pastries are so exceptional they've reportedly inspired life-changing decisions—think chocolate croissants and kumquat cream Danish so good they justify relocating to San Diego. The independent spot earns its stellar reputation through meticulous craftsmanship; reviewers rave that pastries taste even better the next day, and the weekend selection is particularly worth the inevitable wait. Fair warning: parking is tricky and mornings get genuinely crowded, but locals and visitors alike consistently agree the quality makes every minute in line worthwhile.

This place is dangerously good. My mom and I stopped by for the first time today. After taking bites of each item, our eyes got huge as we said, "Oh.. my.. gosh...." We tried the kumquat cream pastry, which was incredibly bright and creamy, buttery and crispy all at the same time! Only improvement would be to have food prices listed.

Why is this so much better the next day?! Decided to stop by this bakery on my way back home from San Diego. Best decision ever! It is hard to find parking here but we got lucky and had just had to walk a block to the bakery. We got there around 1:30 and there was a small line outside. The workers are fast and were able to help everyone efficiently while still being sweet. The ambiance of the place felt nice and welcoming unlike the rest of La Jolla lol. I would really just be coming back for this bakery. At 1:30 there isn’t many options left. Luckily I was able to get chocolate croissants, almond croissants and a cookie. Let me tell you. The croissants are so flaky and buttery! These have been the best croissants I’ve ever tried. If you’re not wiping excess flakes off your shirt when you eat a croissant then it’s not right. This place will be a gem to me always 💘 I’m already looking forward to my next trip.

I knew I wanted to move to San Diego the second I arrived… but I was planning to take my sweet time. Then I ate the chocolate croissant and their sandwich, and now Zillow is open on my phone and I’m emotionally packing boxes. I might be moving next week. This place is dangerous. Every bite felt illegal like I should have needed a permit to enjoy food this good. The chocolate croissant alone deserves its own national holiday, and the sandwich? I experienced a full body spiritual awakening somewhere between the first and second bite. I saw colors. I forgave people. I briefly considered texting my ex just to thank them for leading me to this moment (I didn’t, growth). The staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and patient while I stood there chewing dramatically and whispering “wow” to myself like I had never eaten before. If I disappear from my current city, please check here first I’ll be the person eating pastries like it’s my full time job. Would be down to get a job here too, as long as you dont count my pastry intake

I went to try it as it is recommended as one or the best bakery in San Diego. On the weekends it is very crowded so I went during the week. There were pastries and veggie sandwich. I chose cinnamon loaf. I paid 8.64$ . The loaf was not too sweet. There was nice amount of cinnamon . I thought that’s it is a little bit too buttery for my taste but overall it was a good one. Of course a good bakery should be checked at least two times so I can’t wait to see next time. There are only benches to sit and no tables. Also there are no toilets.

We’ve been here several times, and the best selection is definitely on weekends. Yes, you’ll likely have to stand in line in the morning - but it’s absolutely worth it. Amazing almond croissant, a bun with their signature passion fruit jam, and a really solid matcha ❤️ One of those places with truly great-quality pastries - best for takeout 👌
