Crema's Take

Tucked in a hospital basement, Cafe on L defies expectations with surprisingly solid scratch-made cooking, from fluffy omelets to crispy fries that prove institutional food doesn't have to be institutional. The vibe is casual grab-and-go, perfect for a quick coffee and breakfast before 6pm when the kitchen is in full swing, though service can be inconsistent and the kitchen staff aren't always accommodating with special requests. If you catch them during their prime hours, you'll find fresh, generously portioned food that locals genuinely prefer to the hospital fare upstairs.

Poor service. The breakfast cook is rude. They refused to take a breakfast order even though it was only 10 am and their breakfast items were still out. They don't seem to have a certain time to end breakfast service as we got breakfast after 10 am yesterday.

I ate here yesterday for my annual company event. I asked to have most of my meal boxes to take home. I purposely put a sauce on the salmon to identify it as there were several in our large party doing the same. I was NOT given MY food but someone else's. I called, notified management and was told by the manager he would call me right back or text. He failed to do so. In this age of serious and often deadly disease this is not an acceptable practice to randomly give people food from another's plate.

For a grill in the basement of a hospital they actually make good food! Better than the hospital food in the rooms for suuurreee!!! Fries a little salty - but the omelettes are good and then Philly cheesesteak is lit!

I ordered a spinach mushroom omelette this morning & it was horrible! It was so greasy it was slimy. $8 for an omelette you can’t even swallow. Everything inside was greasy, too like it was saturated in oil. I thought the food would be decent but I would have been better off going to Dennys. Medical cafeterias at UCSF & Stanford are MUCH healthier. I’m a cardiology patient… glad I threw it away. Come on Sutter, practice what you preach!

For a cafe/food court in a hospital, is pretty good. The food is freshly made, and a pretty good variety, as long as you go there before 6 or 7pm. After that, they close a lot of it and go down to a minimal menu.
