Crema's Take

This Portland institution has earned its cult following with potato donuts that deliver an unexpectedly tender, moist crumb that sets them apart from standard fare—the cinnamon sugar and bacon cheddar varieties are particularly worth seeking out. While opinions vary on the richness, the genuine warmth of the experience and the inventive flavor combinations make it a memorable stop that justifies the hype, especially if you're catching it during a less busy moment. It's the kind of place where a casual donut run becomes a genuine discovery, backed by overwhelmingly enthusiastic regulars.

We went to The Holy Donut while we were in Portland and tried a potato donut for the first time in my life. I ordered the cinnamon sugar and it was so good. It had this perfect texture, slightly crisp on the outside and really soft inside, and it wasn’t overly sweet. I honestly did not expect to love a potato donut that much. We got there around noon and most of the donuts were already sold out, which tells you how popular it is. They were still making fresh ones though, and the whole place smelled amazing. I brought one home for my daughter and she ate it the next morning and loved it. She kept saying how good it was. The shop itself is really cute and has a fun, welcoming vibe. The staff was super nice and friendly even though it was busy. I would absolutely recommend stopping here if you are in Portland. It was such a fun little find for us.

The Holy Donut is such a fun and memorable stop in Portland! Their donuts are made with potatoes, which gives them an incredible texture—soft, moist, and perfectly satisfying without being overly sweet. The variety is especially impressive and creative. We tried flavors like sweet potato coffee cake, ginger glazed, dark chocolate sea salt, and pomegranate, and each one was genuinely delicious and unique. The shop is conveniently located downtown and very easy to walk to if you’re exploring the area. We went on a Monday morning, so there was no line at all, but there are clear signs posted for how to queue when lines are out the door—which tells me this place is usually very popular (for good reason). If you’re in Portland, this is absolutely worth a stop. Creative flavors, great quality, and a really enjoyable experience overall.

I should preface I’m not a donut lover unless it’s a cake donut. My friend really wanted to try this place so luckily there was no line and we strolled in. We decided on the gooey bacon and cheese, tater tots and 4 donuts 🍩 maple, blueberry lemon, sweet potato and something else I can’t remember. The gooey bacon and cheese and tots were the show stoppers, we were not a fan of the donuts. They had a very dense consistency, with no flavor outside of whatever frosting or topping was on the donut. We did not finish them and would only return for non donut items 🤷🏾‍♀️ Popular place that others seem to really love but the donuts were not donuting.

The flavor was great but I had a little issue with them being a touch too oily for me. It could be a personal thing but both the old fashioned and the bacon cheddar bites were flavorful but oily. The customer service was really top notch. Helpful and we actually had a minor issue with our order and they immediately addressed it with a smile. It's a rather small place with limited seating but we were there early before the crowds and it was lovely. I think potato makes it a heavier donut and it's great for dunking in coffee. The was yummy and tasted of really good quality in my opinion.

Stopped by The Holy Donut to try their famous potato donuts. I had the toasted coconut, and it was okay — soft and fresh but not as flavorful as I expected. The texture is unique and dense compared to regular donuts. The shop can get busy, especially in the mornings, but the line moves quickly. There’s limited seating, so it’s best for a grab-and-go treat.
