Crema's Take

French Press in Salem is a charming, crepe-focused café where the real star is the coffee—customers consistently praise it as exceptional and worth the visit on its own. The pastries and creative breakfast dishes like their spicy cowboy scramble are beautifully plated and delicious, though service can be inconsistent and the industrial coffee grinder noise occasionally overwhelms the otherwise cozy, family-friendly atmosphere. It's a great spot to linger over a genuinely excellent latte and a sweet or savory crepe, just maybe expect a more leisurely pace than a quick grab-and-go.

Just stopped by to grab a quick breakfast and the place has a cute vibe, but the staff seemed like they did not want to be bothered by customers and definitely took their time coming to help us. To be fair, we were there at about 7:20 and so I guess they had just opened…but there were no pastries in the cabinets, we ordered food and for a few minutes we weren’t even sure if anyone was going to pop in to make it. I got the sunrise crepe and a chai latte. Crepe was delicious! The chai was disappointing and just tasted like milk with hardly any flavor.

We ordered the banana nutella crepe and the caramel apple crepe which were pretty good and plated very nicely. Unfortunately the drinks we ordered were not made correctly at all despite the passive aggression I received while ordering them. I ordered a Black forest latte, and asked if it could be made as a mocha, and was grumpily told "it already has chocolate in it". Came out as a latte with barely any chocolate flavoring, and none of the cherry flavoring that is included in the drink itself? My boyfriend ordered a blended Black Irish and there was none of the tiramisu or irish cream flavoring advertised either. Both drinks tasted like burnt coffee with none of the syrup flavoring either were supposed to come with. $6-8 for each drink that ended up being made wrong, and being met with passive aggression as a first time customer who doesnt understand the menu the way employees who are there everyday was unfortunate. For blended flavored coffee, human bean is a much better bet and won't let you down. Service is a lot friendlier there as well. We stopped after french press at human bean to get the same drinks, which made it even more evident they didnt put the flavor in the drinks we had ordered at french press. I get that today being presidents day might be stressful as someone who works in the service industry, in fast food for that matter; but taking out your stress on customers AND not giving them what they paid for is pretty lame. Small businesses of salem are few in far between, so the way you treat your customers should be a little more important.

“The latte was genuinely good and the prices were fair. But there was a commercial coffee grinder that kept making an extremely loud and sharp noise the whole time. It was honestly overwhelming and made it hard to enjoy my visit. Because of that, I don’t think I’ll be coming back.”

Friendly and helpful staff, amazing crepes and coffee, highly recommend! I was being indecisive so ordered both a savory and a sweet crepe, one would have been plenty for me, but now I have left overs to enjoy later 👀

I was a little bit skeptical when I was referred here because I’m not a huge crepes fan. The coffee is hands down the best cup I’ve ever had. And the spicy cowboy scramble was absolutely to die for. I would eat here every single day if I could.
