Crema's Take

Tucked into the historic Ponchatrain Hotel, this café is as much a visual feast as a culinary one, with a stunning art-filled ceiling that sets the tone for an unhurried morning. The kitchen shines brightest at breakfast, where their cheddar grits and creative egg dishes like the broken yolk sandwich pair perfectly with genuinely excellent espresso, drawing loyal regulars who appreciate both the quality coffee and the warm, attentive service. Whether you're grabbing a fresh pastry to go or settling in for a slow sit with their standout blueberry muffins, there's a palpable sense of care in every detail here.

Great coffee shop with outstanding friendly service-Best blueberry muffin I have had in many years! Another visit and a great experience. Love the decor/artwork. My wife visited two days straight!

Quiet little cafe in the bottom of the Ponchatrain hotel. Really good coffee. The broken yolk sandwich is tasty. Cheddar grits just right. Opens at 7am.

The place is super cute. The ceiling was an art piece all on its own. Had hot coffee with their frittata. It was okay. Not what I was expecting after having Avenue Cafe frittata. I did enjoy the fresh vegetables in it though. My husband had their blood orange juice ( bottled) which was very good and the broken egg sandwich. Personally I liked his meal better than mine. But the staff was wonderful and it’s a great vibe.

I did a lot of good eatin’ during my week in New Orleans, but I must say that breakfast at Silver Whistle Cafe was a standout meal! The atmosphere was delightful - historic charm with just enough modern taste. The coffee was some of the best I had in NOLA. Even seemingly simple dishes had a remarkable quality; for instance, the breakfast parfait was perfection. I usually don’t order this sort of dish in a restaurant since it’s easy to assemble at home, and prepared versions are usually too sweet. But this was better than any parfait I’ve ever made! The granola tasted homey and intensely nutty, and was layered with thick unsweetened yogurt and fresh fruit. The balance between crunchy/creamy and tangy/sweet was ideal. The egg white frittata didn’t sound especially exciting on paper, but it was amazingly flavorful while still being light. And again, the textural counterpoint offered by fresh greens and radishes made things interesting & balanced. The service was speedy and friendly, too. Overall, it was an easy-going and lip-smacking start to the day!

A historic wonder brought back to life and worth it just for the gorgeous interior (also check out the bar across the hotel lobby as it's hand painted bayou murals are fabulous too). The grits are stone ground and substantial. A true historic recipe that makes them absolutely delicious without adding cheese or anything else. I loved them. Also the hash browns are cooked in duck fat and delicious. Don't write them off. I had the pimento cheese omelette because weight gain be damned, I want a decadent culinary adventure, and I was in no way disappointed.
