Crema's Take

Tucked into Durham's historic Snow Building, Soif is a hidden gem that feels like discovering a secret speakeasy for coffee lovers—beautifully designed with impeccable taste, it's equally beloved for its thoughtfully curated drinks (both caffeinated and not) and the genuine warmth of its barista team. This was such a nice discovery, unassuming but classy, small yet inviting. Enjoyed a Crodino (NA Italian sweet-bitter soda) and a well-balanced coffee milk stout, complemented by a nice brief chat with the bartender. Lovely spot to enjoy a conversation with a friend.

So cute! Love the options of non-caffeinated and low alcohol drinks. Mars (barista) is fantastic! It’s a hidden away little coffee shop that makes you feel like you have a cozy and private resting place in the middle of downtown Durham.

Soif (pronounced “swehf,” meaning “thirst” in French—this non-Francophone had to look it up) is an absolute gem in the historic Snow Building on Main St. The owner(s) clearly have impeccable taste. The interior—marble countertops, walnut trim, and vintage details reminiscent of an Italian café—fits seamlessly within the building, as if it’s always been there. Nothing feels forced; the vibe is effortlessly cool, calm, and inviting. Seating is intentionally limited, mostly bar-style stools, which reinforces the concept. You’re not going to see people camped out on laptops (no Wi-Fi), and that’s part of the charm. It’s a place to slow down—have a conversation, enjoy a drink, maybe work through a crossword. The barista was warm and friendly, and the cortado and cappuccino were both excellent. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a thoughtfully designed, analog-friendly coffee experience in Durham.
