Crema's Take

Bruto is a charming espresso-focused cafe where the coffee is as carefully crafted as the food—think strong, smooth pulls paired with phenomenal sandwiches and a caesar salad that keeps people coming back. The cozy, thoughtfully decorated space strikes that rare balance of being perfect for serious coffee lovers and remote workers alike, with genuinely kind staff who make every visit feel special. It's the kind of neighborhood spot where a short, intentional menu and made-from-scratch approach signal that quality matters more than quantity.

So the food here is phenomenal as is the service. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that the two sandwiches in the photo are both “whole” $15 sandwiches. I went back and let them know I’d only been given half a sandwich, to which they let me know that is actually a whole sandwich. That is an Il Capitano sandwich and apparently they were out of regular bread so that’s why the whole sandwich I bought is actually a half of the other whole sandwich I bought. I inquired and the staff was lovely and the full reason for getting 4 stars I was given a coffee and cookie just for inquiring but at the end of the day I paid $30 for 1 and a half sandwiches. I think this is a menu problem I think a whole sandwich at the same price point should at the very least seem comparable to the other whole sandwiches. I think the missing bread is what really draws out the visual disparity between the two I just want to get comparable amounts of food for the same price. I would have gladly paid $10 or so for the Il Capitano if I had known it was going to be half of the size of the other whole sandwich I purchased. If I had just been given another “whole” (aka a half) I would have given 5 stars but again the staff was as lovely and customer service focused as they could have been so I think this is a menu issue. $15 sandwiches can’t literally be half of the size of the other $15 sandwiches on the menu. If you have that much quantity difference at the same price point then maybe add pictures to the menu or consider adjusting pricing or terminology.

Finally got around to trying this place out today. I'm constantly on the road for work and try to find places across Central AL that I can use as "homebases" to stop, get coffee, eat, use facilities, and get admin work done when I'm remote. This place is centrally-located to a lot of other food, bars, retail, etc., between Avondale and Crestwood so it's gonna be a great option to stop at later in the day and then meet up with folks nearby after the workday. There's plenty of parking and, because of the beautiful weather today, they had their ceiling to floor windows/doors completely open out front. Whether you were inside or out, it was all al fresco and I was loving every minute of it. The guy who greeted me and took my order with the dreads was super friendly and was nice enough to ask about my work and engage in conversation besides just ringing me up. (Felt kinda like a jerk cause I didn't even bother to ask him about how HIS day was going. 😐) I sat outside, windy as it was, and the whole time it was quiet, there were few people in the place, and the music was just loud enough to help stimulate productivity but not too loud to be distracting. I got the mortadella sandwich with a drip coffee. I always get drip coffee anywhere I go for the first time because that helps me gauge whether or not the specialty coffees will be skillfully made. The drip was pretty darn good. It wasn't as robust as some but the place isn't technically a coffee shop, per se, either. The sandwich's components inside were really flavorful, but there was SO MUCH BREAD. The bread wasn't stale or anything but it was just a HUGE roll on top and bottom of the meat, cheese, pickles, and condiments that it was all I could taste. (And all my hips and rear will be acquiring. Ha!) The fact that the enormous roll came with a mountain of potato chips was almost comical, too. The huge meal and coffee was about $13 after tax which isn't anything to scoff at nowadays. Plus, I believe the guy said drip coffee gets free refills. I didn't get one before I left since I couldn't stay long enough but next time that'll be good information to keep handy. Otherwise, everything about the trip was a great experience so I'll probably just try their pizza or another dish next time I'm there. Definitely can't wait to make a trip back!

What a charming cafe! Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or just coffee with friends. Came for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and it was busy, but still some tables free. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Unclear if they restock the baked goods and pizzas throughout the day; when we ordered they had already run out of blueberry muffins and were running low on other things. Be warned! We ordered an il capitano sandwich with a sode caesar salad in place of chips, a slice of margherita bruto pizza, an iced latte with black pepper maple flavoring, and key lime and s'mores cookies. The sandwich was very good, with high quality ingredients, plenty of prosciutto, and perfect bread. The salad and pizza were both great as well, and we quite enjoyed the inventive cookies. We'll definitely be back to try more!

Very cute shop. The furniture and decor is so cozy and lovely, and the sandwiches are great, and the caesar salad is to die for, and every time I walk in the staff are so kind!! Love it here!

Oh man, This place is so good. I like my coffee, strong, smooth and flavorful, and they checked all those boxes. I like that this place keeps the menu short and simple and everything is made from scratch. I really don’t like going to coffee shops with an overextended menu. Just focus on what you Do great. I also added a chocolate chip cookie. They also baked in house excellent. Caramel latte was probably one of the best I’ve had ever. It’s a little on the small side, which is my only complaint, but it’s totally worth it. I will be back as this is right down the street from me.
