Crema's Take

Nestled in downtown Lawrence, this cozy spot has become a Saturday morning ritual for locals heading to the farmers market, with a particularly beloved upstairs lounge that invites lingering conversations over coffee. The kitchen shines with solid breakfast options and pastries that pair well with their traditional drinks, though consistency with espresso drinks can be hit-or-miss, and the welcoming, dog-friendly atmosphere makes it an ideal gathering place for book clubs and casual meetups.

Sunflower Cafe is such a boon to the downtown Lawrence community. It’s often where we stop for a coffee on our way to the farmers market on Saturday mornings. The upstairs lounge is perfect for a coffee meet-up with a friend or an evening glass of wine with a good book. The service is always prompt and friendly. The food is simple, but good. And the coffee is top notch.

The service and atmosphere was great, but unfortunately my drink (iced café mocha latte) did not meet expectations. The drink tasted watered down from the start, and the coffee itself tasted more sour than it should have been, alongside little chocolate flavor. I imagine the grind was too coarse and the water used was too cold, and perhaps not enough sauce. A lot of non-chain coffee shops in Lawrence suffer from similar under-extraction issues, which is unfortunate. Doesn't make sense to charge Starbucks/Dutch/Scooters prices if the taste isn't comparable or better.

I live out of town and popped by for a to-go order. The lady at the register was not professional in her engagement with the two gentlemen in front of me. They asked basic questions about food and the employee seemed short with them. I ordered a breakfast burrito to go, nothing else. I figured it would be a 15 min wait based on the reviews. It was 29 min before I received my single burrito. No staff checked in with me during that time to update me on the wait time. Or, to see if I needed anything while I waited. Hospitality, service, and generosity are crucial. The lack of awareness and acknowledgement of my wait time on their end surprised me. In a town that sees numerous vistors and residents my hope is that this place is able to create a more positive first-time experience for others. However, I wont be back.

Our book club came here to meet for the month of October. We got coffee & breakfast! Everything was delicious😋! We spent probably 2 hours there just eating, talking & enjoying the atmosphere. Huge space upstairs, they were so busy but it's so big & spread out you don't feel crammed in like sardines. Can't wait to go back!

We went there for breakfast. We ordered the egg sandwich with bacon, classic breakfast, black tea (Earl Grey), and coffee. The food was tasty. Coffee refills should be included in the price. It is awkward to go back for a coffee refill only to be told you have to pay extra. I don't mind paying extra for coffee refills, but that option should be offered when the original order is placed.
