Crema's Take
“This Seattle institution perfectly blends nostalgia with convenience, preserving its identity as a beloved newsstand while evolving into a genuinely good coffee destination that baristas will happily help you navigate. The walk-up window makes it ideal for quick caffeine runs to UW, but the real magic happens when you linger among the impossibly curated magazine walls with a hot cup in hand, creating an unexpectedly cozy refuge for both browsers and serious coffee seekers.”

Great spot! I recommend for hangouts and coffee pick ups on your way to and from west campus. The pick up window outside is super convenient. Also ask the barista for a recommendation, they have never once recommended me something I didn't like. Not my favourite study spot (hard to get a table), I recommend taking to go and then hopping to ode with your treats!
Well, what can you say? It's amazing this place even exists today as a news stand and it pretty much only exists now because it's a cafe with a wall of magazines and the periodicals part is a quarter of the store. I don't buy or read magazines the way I used to, which was all the time and the magazines that I used to read aren't the same any more, so I'm as guilty of not keeping news stands going as the next person but at least there's still somewhat of a news stand in Seattle. I really prefer the Barnes and Nobles in Northgate as it's more of a regular news stand than Bulldog and has a lot more titles and a lot more regularly read versus high end magazines and most of what I saw were high end, "art-esque" magazines that are expensive and more pictures than articles. But the store is filled with undergraduates studying, talking, drinking coffee and eating pastries. They seemed to be having a good time which was nice to see. The Ave has gone straight to total hell though: broken glass everywhere, all types of liquid spilled on the windows of these shops that no one has cleaned up, and restaurants where the highest cleanliness rating is "okay," and the entire area just looks like trash and then a bunch of street people, one guy walking around half naked but that's better than the naked guy I saw shooting up in the alley years ago. This used to be such a great shopping center, not even that long ago. If the undergrads went away, this street would be over and DOA it would make your head spin. But since that's not going to happen any time soon, The Ave will probably stay on life support for quite some time, long past it's expiration date.
Ok, do I wish bulldog still just mostly sold magazines and the store was still mostly a newsstand? Of course. But they didn't invent the Internet or kill my favorite media format and they've done a great job transitioning the business to be a killer cafe while still selling magazines and providing great customer service. Well staffed, great drinks, great food, great ice cream, and the best selection in Seattle or actual print magazines. ❤️
Popular cafe and newsstand with magazines on seemingly every topic. The coffee and food are good, and the walk-up window is a convenient way to get some caffeine and a pastry on the way to UW or wherever else you're heading. There's indoor tables and a smaller patio area available for seating if the weather's nice.
Tell me a better combo than rainy weather, a stack of used books, and a hot cup of coffee I’ll wait! I stopped by this café after picking up some books and decided to skim through a few while enjoying a hot Americano. The cashier was kind, service was smooth, and the coffee was delicious. A couple of small things I wish were different: the table I sat at wobbled a bit (I accidentally bumped it and spilled some coffee), and it would’ve been nice if dine-in coffee was served in a porcelain cup. With such an interesting interior design, I think using quality drinkware would really elevate the whole experience.
