Joyu Tea & Coffee

Crema's Take

Jōyū brings a thoughtful blend of coffee and tea craftsmanship to Virginia Beach, where baristas genuinely care about execution—think silky pistachio coffees, perfectly balanced brown sugar milk teas, and creative seasonal specials like their tarot lava drink that actually taste as intentional as they sound. The space itself feels like a destination rather than a pit stop: bright and clean with great music and an intuitive ordering system that welcomes both coffee nerds and casual visitors looking for a leisurely sit-down experience. What keeps people coming back is the combination of warm hospitality, quality ingredients that shine through in drinks like their mango matcha dream, and a menu that experiments with flavor without losing sight of balance.

Joyu is always very welcoming and friendly! This time I ordered one of their new winter specials- the Pistachio Silk Coffee and added coffee jellies. It’s just as the name implies- silky and sweet with hints of pistachio. You should try it!

As a barista myself I was so excited to try Jōyū for the first time. I got a brown sugar fresh milk which was *chefs kiss* and the cashier recommended a mango matcha dream which was also incredible. The two workers were extremely helpful and nice :) I’ve fallen in love already and can’t wait to come back to try more!

I was excited to try this place with my son. The restaurant itself is bright, clean, and tidy, with great music and an easy, user-friendly way to order. I also liked that they offer a drink-and-pastry combo, and the pastry I tried was decent. Unfortunately, the biggest downfall—and the reason I likely won’t return—is the staff. The girl cashier was very unfriendly. While my son was ordering at the kiosk, I stood at the counter looking over the menu. She looked at me several times but never greeted me, offered help, or made a suggestion. It felt unwelcoming, as if customers weren’t worth the effort. On the other hand, the guy preparing drinks was somewhat polite. I even heard him greet another customer who walked in, and he told us goodbye when we left, which I appreciated. My coffee itself wasn’t anything special, though my son enjoyed his two drinks. Still, good drinks and a pastry combo aren’t enough to make up for poor customer service. A little friendliness goes a long way, and honestly, the guy preparing drinks showed more hospitality in one moment than the cashier did the entire time.

I got a tarot lava brownsugar milk tea and it was delicious. Their boba tasted like it was made with brown sugar syrup rather than honey which I prefer. The taro foam had a slight salty taste that balances the sweet perfectly. My daughter tasted it and begged to go back the next day. Staff was very friendly as well. Not much seating but great for grab and go. Highly recommend.
