Crema's Take
“Tucked away in Exeter, this espresso-focused café has won over regulars and newcomers alike with genuinely excellent cappuccinos and lattes that showcase real skill—one 62-year-old reviewer called their cappuccino the best of their life. Beyond the impeccable coffee craft, D Squared Java feels like a genuine neighborhood gathering spot with cozy, adorable decor and a calming atmosphere that makes it perfect for lingering over a cup or settling in to work. Their homemade syrups and seasonal touches (like winter whipped cream) reveal a thoughtful approach that goes beyond the chain coffee experience.”

A friend and I tried this place for the first time today. I ordered a mocha with whipped cream, and was told that they only make whipped cream in the winter. This confused me since it’s still very much winter. So, I did that dumb thing where you repeat what someone says, but in the form of a question—“You only make whipped cream in the winter?” (With a befuddled look on my face.) Her response, while obviously annoyed with my presence, was: “We only make whipped cream in December.” I held out hope, even still, only to be extremely disappointed by a mocha with no mocha flavor whatsoever; it tasted like an espresso with too much milk and way too much foam. My friend was equally disappointed with her regular coffee. I liked the vibe of this place, minus how dark it seemed. I think perhaps it seemed extra “dark” because my friend and I were treated like we were an inconvenience. It
Unbeknownst to me that I would walk into this little coffee shop and order the best cappuccino of my life. (I'm 62 yo) I normally just drink coffee with cream and sugar so this was new for me! It was beautiful and tasted ABSOLUTELY AMAZING with NO SUGAR!!! I proceeded to try cappuccinos wherever I traveled and then to purchase my own espresso machine and for the life of me cannot find nor recreate anything close to what I received that day in this little coffee shop. Had I realized how special that coffee really was I would have been much more grateful in person!! Thank you so much, D Squared Java, for such a memorable cappuccino experience!!!
Chose to go local rather than Starbucks, Dunkin, or Joe's. I've been here a few times but I tend to be out later in the day and local isn't always an option if I plan to be in a place working or drawing. The cafe is nice, small, with some two seater tables. They make a good use of space with bar seating. Not a place to stay if you've got more than 2 of you wanting a table unless you can grab the floor cushion seating at the front. The drink specials are on the refrigerator behind the counter and I never would have even thought to look for them if I didn't notice the board in the window on my way in. My Halloween Fog was pretty good, a little light on flavor but with a nice foam. Poppyseed cake was *very* greasy and bland. Not sure I would chance a pastry again. Service - not great. There was no one in line and nothing being prepared, still felt like I was a bother. In the less than 2 minute interaction at register and picking up the cup, just pretend you enjoy what you're doing. You don't have to go over the top, you don't have to chat, just be nice. The barista more than the person at the register. Makes me regret giving a tip. I really, really, really want to support local business. Frustrating. *Looking at other reviews, interesting pattern.
I will definitely come back again! Service was wonderful and the atmosphere was calming. The breakfast sandwich was tasty but a little salty. I also tried their iced latte with their homemade caramel sauce; it was quite smooth and no need to add additional sugar.
t’s a beautiful caffe with cozy tables and adorable decor. We had regular latte and oat latte. Both drinks were delicious. My regular latte had the best foam. It was smooth and silky. Everyone is very friendly and the place has positive vibes.
