Crema's Take

Emissary is a beloved Dupont Circle institution where impeccably kind staff and consistently excellent drinks (try their signature mocktail espresso martini) create an atmosphere that keeps people coming back for years. The spacious, cozy cafe strikes that rare balance of being perfect for focused work sessions or lingering brunches with friends, with a roster of creative specialty drinks and American-style food that goes beyond the typical coffee shop fare.

My go-to coffee shop! I’ve visited for years and recently became a regular. The staff - from cashiers and baristas to cooks and servers are truly the most professional, kind and lovely people. I’ve always felt welcomed and treated with warmth, even on my “not so good” days. The coffee is great, the pastries and food are clearly made with love, and the atmosphere is always warm. Practicing my Spanish here is a nice bonus. My only wish? That Emissary stayed open for a few more hours!

I love stopping in at Emissary for a latte and croissant during the week. It’s the perfect place to sit and get some work done when I need a change of atmosphere. They have plenty of seating space so I never have to worry about getting a spot! The staff is also always so kind - especially Paulo and Isabelle. Glad to have a spot like this one in the neighborhood - though I’m sad they have shorter hours for the winter. Eagerly waiting for it to warm up so I can sit here after work as well!

Great location, small place with a hipster atmosphere of sorts. A couple of pastry options displayed on the counter, but they didnn't look fresh and are not cheap. The barista takes their time to decorate a coffee, eventually. But getting a leaf decorating my coffee foam cost me 30mins of waiting time, and the coffee got to the table cold. Which was a pity, because the coffee flavor was good. Place was busy but plenty of tables free, and plenty of staff serving the tables and behind the counter, so it's unclear why the waiting time is so long.

Great spot for a coffee and brunch! Cute vibes and good drinks. Definitely recommend their mocktail espresso martini (the chai flavor is excellent). We enjoyed our brunch specials- the sandwiches and pasta are always great.

A classic for a reason! This Dupont Circle favorite features a wide selection of tasty caffeinated beverages and American-style fare, served in a super spacious and cozy cafe with friendly staff. I’ve been to Emissary more times than I can count for morning coffee, mid-day coffee, and evening coffee — there are very few places I can find in the city that serve coffee and/or allow people to hang out and work / read / chill so late. I generally just get their coffee, but it’s all been great, whether you’re looking for an iced coffee or something espresso-based. The matcha isn’t my favorite but it’s still pretty solid, and I’ve only ever tried their fries (which are more like patatas bravas or larger chunks of potatoes vs. American-style fries) but they were super tasty.
