Crema's Take

Athens Market Taverna is a beloved neighborhood gem in downtown San Diego where authentic Greek hospitality shines through in every detail, from staff like Winny who genuinely help you navigate the menu to the warm, family-run atmosphere that makes locals keep coming back. The Mediterranean food here is the real deal—reviewers rave it's some of the best Greek cuisine they've ever tasted—and the outdoor seating paired with a slower pace makes it perfect for lingering conversations with friends or family. It's the kind of place that feels like a well-kept secret despite its stellar reputation, where even kids are welcomed with genuine care and accommodation.

Wonderful place for an authentic Greek experience. Food was delicious and service was exceptional. Winny, our server, was fantastic, extremely pleasant and helpful in selecting food choices. Checked on us frequently and allowed us to enjoy the spectacular food/wine in a welcoming setting. Ms Mary, the owner, stopped at our table to make sure everyone was happy. Her friendly, personal touch with us explains why she has been serving the neighborhood for 52 years. She made us feel welcomed, appreciated and part of her family. Highly recommend Athens Market Taverna.

I cannot believe I neglected to review this place before now?!!! It's walking distance from our house and we lovvvve Mediterranean food, so super glad to have these folks nearby. During each visit, we went shortly after the opened - The waitress/bartender was friendly and helpful. I have food issues and she was good about working through it with me to help me choose items that I would enjoy. One thing I want to make note of before I forget, if you're there before 7 or so be sure to ask for their Happy Hour menu. They don't automatically hand it out (I cannot remember how long their Happy Hour lasts, I totally guessed at 7). The HH menu contains some of the same items as the regular menu at a reduced price (I'll admit that it's a bit annoying that you have to be a regular to know this, but now you know and can act like a regular when you go in). We've had their Vegan Dolmathes, Saganaki, Feta Cheese & Olives, Greek Salad with gyro meat, and the hubs ordered a skewer of some sort of meat and I don't remember what it was - but we've enjoyed everything so far. I'm not a fan of photos taken by the 'average joe', so you'll very rarely see me take a picture - I like to leave that to the pros that make the menu items look pristine (besides, we usually dive into our food and don't think about it in time). We'll be back, we love the location and thoroughly enjoy the food. Thank you for reading my review!

I don’t know where I have been in the last 50 plus years, but it wasn’t at this wonderful restaurant. If you live in San Diego or are visiting and enjoy authentic Greek cuisine. Don’t miss out like I have and head over to Athens Market Taverna.I am so glad that my daughter recommended that we eat dinner here tonight. The restaurant was busy for a Wednesday evening with a very local crowd of loyal customers. Great ambience. Our server Bonnie made some great recommendations for dinner. We started with the Saganaki, flaming Greek cheese. A show in itself, followed by the most wonderful, moist and tender perfectly spiced and grilled Souvlaki’s. Bonnie’s service equally matched the delicious food. We finished with a homemade Baklava that was to die for. To cap the evening off the owner Mary came out and introduced herself and chatty chatted with us. It was an authentic conversation that matched the authentic Greek cuisine at her family restaurant. I am planning on becoming a regular here. OPAH!

What a hidden gem in downtown San Diego. You won’t regret visiting! Food was amazing, service was wonderful, and they were very accommodating to our two kids. They do not have a kid menu but the staff offered options not on the menu for our kids. We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the baby octopus and kabobs. We went for a holiday dinner with family visiting from out of town. We would love to go again!

Recommended by a coworker and WOW were they right. Quiet (probably because I was there on a Monday) family run restaurant with really friendly service and probably the best Greek food I’ve ever had. My server recommended the sample platter and it was a perfect way to try their best dishes. I came on a solo work trip to SD but I’ll be bringing my family back with me next month, I’ll insist we eat here!
