Prairie Fire
1308 W Dayton St, Madison, WI
Crema's Take
“Prairie Fire draws a loyal crowd with its espresso-focused menu and welcoming lounge atmosphere, though consistency seems to be a work in progress across both drinks and service. The space excels as a laptop-friendly gathering spot near campus where you can linger over cold brew or specialty drinks, though you might want to budget extra time for your order. While food offerings like bagels and breakfast sandwiches have their fans, this is a place where the vibe and location matter more than expecting consistently excellent coffee every visit.”

The young Korean guy reminds me of Andrew Choi. And he makes the very mid coffee here, totally peak.
Typical overpriced, mediocre coffee spot. I stop by occasionally since it's conveniently located near my classes, but today’s experience was disappointing. I ordered a large chai tea latte for around $7, only to receive a cup that was half full and mostly foam. I could tell something was off the moment I picked it up—it felt ridiculously light. Normally, I wouldn’t say anything, but for the price, I expected a full drink. When I brought it up to an employee, another cashier chimed in with a snarky and dismissive comment, insisting it wasn’t half full—even though it very clearly was! Unprofessional service on top of overpriced drinks isn’t exactly a winning combination.
The white older lady that is currently employed here and working the register was terribly rude and provided terrible customer service. My friend whose first language is Spanish, not English, approached the older woman and asked for a caramel coffee, but didn’t understand that she had to specify that she wanted a latte. So when the lady repeated the order back to her, my friend asked if the coffee was a latte just to clarify, and then the older lady screamed back at her “DO YOU WANT A COFFEE OR A LATTE?? WHICH ONE IS IT??” And my friend was very upset by this, rightfully so, but just said “sorry I meant a latte.” Then when the drink was made, they gave her a medium and not a large like she asked. So she told another employee, but before he could answer the older woman yelled no you asked for a medium! And so my friend told the other employee that she is being very rude, and all they could disappointedly say was “yeah.. I’m sorry she’s just like that.” This behavior shouldn’t be tolerated, it’s disrespectful and very odd.
Excellent Peet’s iced mocha with great sitting lounge
This place has ok food. I like their bagels and breakfast croissant sandwiches. But it took FOREVER to get my latte. Almost half and hour. And then my drink wasn’t even what I wanted. I ordered and iced latte and they gave me a hot latte. When I told them I ordered an iced one, the lady promptly said, “Well you ordered a hot one” and didn’t seem like she had any intention of fixing my order. Nonetheless, I didn’t have time to have them remake my order and there was a significantly long line. As a barista myself, I understand things can get really busy and stressful but decent customer service would be nice. The lady seemed very unapologetic due to the influx of orders and short staff.
