Crema's Take

Compliments Only brings playful energy to Capitol Hill with creative, generously-portioned sandwiches that have genuinely won over skeptics of the neighborhood's newer spots—think the Big Dipper for fall cravings or the hilariously-named Crunchy Boi alongside quality coffee. The owner's welcoming presence is woven into the vibe, and regulars are clearly invested in rotating through the signature builds on excellent bread, making this feel less like a grab-and-go chain and more like a neighborhood spot that actually cares.

There isn’t an option to add sweet and hot peppers on UberEats. I called and asked for peppers to be added to my sandwich after I placed my order. The guy said sure, but yet there isn’t s single pepper on my sandwich. I also paid extra for more garlic mayo on my sandwich, but there isn’t. This is the second time this has happened. I’m done with this place for a while.

Love that this is now in our neighborhood. My favorite sandwich has been the Marisa Tomei, but I just tried the Big Dipper and this is an amazing fall sandwich… I don’t know what magic made them invent this “cornbread mayo”, but it is spectacular with the sourness of the cranberry sauce and the turkey. The sandwiches are on the expensive side, but they are huge, enough for two meals for me - I usually only eat half, with some Utz chips with their delicious french onion dip (with real chopped up caramalized onion in it!). My friend always gets the Crunchy Boi - which she feels is one of the best sandwiches she has ever eaten.

we’re so glad another location opened in Capitol Hill! came in on a Sunday and met the owner who was super sweet and welcoming. i got the sicky wicky and my fiance got the crunchy boi and both were delicious!! there’s seating indoors and our doors and we’ll definitely be back to support this small business!

Subbs by Carl, Mother Rucker's, A Litteri, Mangialardo's, I'm a big fan of some of D.C.'s long-time sandwich shops. That's why I'm a little suspect of newcomers, but Compliments Only humbled me. Here's why. 1) Food: There are 11 subs on the menu or you can build your own. Both my friend and I ordered the "Crunchy Boi" because it comes with potato chips inside, which adds more salt and a great crunch. The soft roll, garlic mayo, and shredded lettuce make the sub even more tasty. I devoured it despite how big it is. So good! 2) Drinks: They sell canned drinks like Coca-Cola, Just Ice Tea, and Dr. Brown soda. The Black Cherry Dr. Brown hit the spot. They also have a jug of water out for free. 3) Service: Going around noon on a June Wednesday, we were served right away. The staff make your sub right before your eyes. Within minutes, our sub was ready to eat. 4) Space: It's much larger than their OG location in Dupont Circle. There are several tables inside. 5) Neighborhood: It's along Barracks Row on Capitol Hill surrounded by other restaurants, bars, murals, and even a historic theater. Street parking is nearby despite it taking some time to find it certain times. It's also a short walk from the Eastern Market Metro.

The food was excellent. I got the roast beef boi (minus pickles and oil & vinegar); my daughter got the crunchy boi, as is. Both were great. Huge portions. Great bread (I’d love a toasted option, but it was very good). The oil didn’t make the bread soggy, which she really appreciated. The chips in the sandwich are hard to beat. We got cookies for later, but they look great. The only thing I would want on the menu that was missing is chicken salad. They have tuna and egg, but no chicken salad. For us, that was two meals each for $40. Not a bad price at all.
