The By & By
140 E Beverley St, Staunton, VA
Crema's Take
“Tucked near downtown Staunton, The By & By has mastered the art of the unhurried morning, where quality breakfast bagel sandwiches and carefully crafted coffee create the kind of cozy, welcoming atmosphere that keeps locals coming back. The space strikes that rare balance between comfortable enough to linger for hours and attentive enough that you never feel rushed, with friendly staff and dog-friendly outdoor seating that makes it feel more like visiting a friend's kitchen than grabbing coffee to-go.”

Please note, this is based on my experience at By & By. Hopefully the owner sees this. The garlic bagels that were on special probably sounded good in your head, however, as soon as I could smell the garlic burning I knew it was too late. Burned garlic is not appetizing and should be avoided at all costs. Please taste your food and if it tastes bad don't serve it. The coffee was good, the atmosphere was chill.
It felt very homey and comfortable. The service was friendly, and the food was good. It’s just around the corner from the hotel, making the location very convenient.
This is my favorite cafe in town. Always friendly staff. Food is always good. And such a cozy environment. Highly recommend!
By & By nails the whole “slow morning done right” vibe. The breakfast bagel sandwich was next-level — soft, chewy, perfectly toasted bagel loaded with melty cheese, fluffy egg, and that savory hit of sausage that just makes everything better. Simple, but done with total precision. The hot latte? Smooth, cozy, and exactly what you want in your hand while people-watching from a sunlit corner. There’s tons of seating too — the kind of place you could hang for hours with a good playlist and pretend you’re writing your next big idea. By & By just gets it — calm, delicious, and effortlessly cool.
We stopped in for brunch and coffee on a Sunday morning in early March while traveling. We arrived just before 11a - a lot of the tables were full but the line to order wasn’t very long. The barista/cashier was friendly. We ordered coffee, a breakfast sandwich, a banana and a BLT. We were able to get a table inside but I see they do have some outdoor seating which would be nice in warmer weather. The coffee was hot and good. The food was good as well. There was a live 3-piece band playing some tunes in the front window. That was cool and they weren’t so loud so it was it was a nice unexpected experience. I would for sure come here again if ever in town.
