The Quick Shot

Hood River is the Columbia Gorge's coffee hub, with KickStand and Broder Øst running full kitchens, Dog River pulling Coava espresso, and 10 Speed roasting its own. Head up the Fruit Loop or east along the river and the finds get better: Moby in Parkdale has a perfect 5.0 and Mt. Hood out the window, Randonnee roasts in Mosier, and Kaile'a is a cart in Cascade Locks. Crema tracks 31 independent shops in Hood River, chains excluded.

The Columbia Gorge is where the wind comes from. That is not a metaphor, it is the entire economy: the pressure gradient between the wet west side and the dry east side funnels through a river canyon and turns Hood River into one of the best windsurfing and kiteboarding towns on earth. The other half of the economy is fruit. Pears, apples, and cherries grow up the valley toward Mt. Hood on a loop road every visitor drives at least once. Coffee here serves both crowds, which means it opens early for people who want to be on the water by nine and it stays substantial enough to feed people who have been outside all day. Hood River itself has most of the shops. The interesting ones are twenty minutes out, in towns of a few hundred people with the mountain sitting right there.

Local Grounds

Downtown Hood River

Oak Street and the blocks around it. Gear shops, breweries, and the densest coffee in the Gorge. Steep enough that you feel it walking uphill from the river.

The Waterfront

North of the highway on the Columbia. Where the windsurfers rig up. Coffee with a direct view of the wind you are about to go out in.

The Fruit Loop: Odell & Parkdale

South up the Hood River Valley through orchards toward the mountain. Parkdale sits at the base of Mt. Hood and has maybe 300 people.

Mosier & Cascade Locks

East and west along the river. Mosier is a few blocks off the old scenic highway. Cascade Locks is the Bridge of the Gods and the Pacific Crest Trail crossing.

Barista’s Notes

  • 01If you are getting on the water, Country Coffee on Tucker Road opens at 5:30am on weekdays and has a drive-thru. Nothing else in the Gorge is open that early.
  • 02The Fruit Loop is a 35-mile drive south from Hood River through the orchards and back. Parkdale is the far end. Do it in the morning when Mt. Hood is not hazed over.
  • 03Mosier is seven minutes east of Hood River on I-84 and feels an hour away. Randonnee is the reason to take the exit.
  • 04Hood River parking downtown is metered and tight in summer. 10 Speed up on 13th Street has free parking and is a five-minute walk from Oak.
  • 05Several places close two days a week: Dog River on Monday, Édeske on Tuesday and Wednesday, Moby on Tuesday, and Kaile'a on Sunday. The Gorge is a weekend destination with weekday business hours.

The Gorge packs a surprising amount of good coffee into a few small towns with a mountain at the end of the road. Browse every independent shop in the region below.
