The Quick Shot

Kansas City's coffee scene is anchored in the Crossroads Arts District, with Midtown Troost and Westport rounding it out. Top shops include Messenger Coffee Co., Mildred's Coffee, Oddly Correct, and Chezelle Creperie, with hidden gems like Sister Anne's Coffee, Morning Rounds Coffee, and West Plaza Bodega. Crema tracks 110 independent shops in Kansas City, chains excluded.

Kansas City is a city that takes its food seriously and has extended that seriousness to coffee. The Crossroads Arts District is the creative engine and the coffee scene grew up around it. The Plaza has the money and the foot traffic. 18th and Vine has the history. Troost Avenue is where the neighborhood coffee culture is developing fastest. Messenger Coffee built a roastery in the Crossroads that would be remarkable in any city and is genuinely impressive in the middle of the country. The BBQ question comes up before everything else when you mention KC. The answer to the coffee question is equally strong. People just don't know it yet.

Local Grounds

Crossroads Arts District

The creative neighborhood. Messenger Coffee is here. Gallery openings, art studios, and some of the best espresso in the Midwest.

Country Club Plaza

The shopping district with the Spanish architecture. Coffee options here serve the shopping crowd and do it well.

Westport

The bar neighborhood that also does coffee in the mornings. The energy shifts at noon and the coffee shops know it.

Midtown / Troost

Oddly Correct is here. The neighborhood is developing a coffee culture that's more local and less visitor-facing than the Plaza.

Worth the Grind

Barista’s Notes

  • 01Kansas City is a driving city. The neighborhoods are spread out. Crossroads to Westport is about 10 minutes with no traffic.
  • 02The barbecue conversation is unavoidable. Accept it and plan lunch accordingly.
  • 03Messenger Coffee has a second location in Westport. The Crossroads original is worth the drive for the roastery experience.
  • 04KC gets hot in summer and genuinely cold in winter. The coffee shops are equipped for both.
  • 05Parking in the Crossroads is generally easier than comparable art districts in larger cities.
