St. Louis Coffee Guide
Cherokee Street, South City, and a café scene that doesn't need your approval
5 min read · June 2026 · By Gabe Petersen
The Quick Shot
Cherokee Street is the anchor — Mud House and MoKaBe's define the neighborhood. Sump Coffee in South City is the craft roaster the whole city talks about. Northwest Coffee Roasting has been at it longer than most. The Drip on Potomac Street is the hidden find worth the detour. Crema tracks 118 independent shops in St. Louis, chains excluded.
St. Louis doesn't have a PR department and doesn't want one. The coffee scene here, centered on Cherokee Street and spreading through South City, developed without much national attention and is better for it. Sump Coffee built a reputation on the quality of its cup alone. The Mud House has been the anchor of a gritty arts corridor long enough to have seen neighborhoods gentrify and un-gentrify around it. MoKaBe's is a community coffeehouse in the fullest sense of that word. This is a city that knows what it is.
Local Grounds
Cherokee Street
The indie corridor. Murals, vintage shops, and the best café concentration in the city. Start here.
South City
Where the serious roasters are. Quieter than Cherokee, higher extraction standards.
Midtown / Grand Center
Arts district energy, walkable blocks, a few strong anchors near the Fox Theatre.
Benton Park
Old brick row houses, neighborhood café pace. Less hustle than Cherokee but worth it.
Worth the Grind
Barista’s Notes
- 01Cherokee Street is a legitimate half-day. Café, vintage, mural walk, lunch. Don't rush it.
- 02St. Louis has free parking almost everywhere. A rare gift. Use it.
- 03The Gateway Arch grounds are a 10-minute drive from Cherokee. Worth the visit after your coffee run.
- 04Sump runs out of certain roasts by midday on weekends. Go early if you want options.
- 05St. Louis is genuinely underrated as a food city. The café scene is just one piece of it.
