Crema's Take

Tucked away on a Detroit side street, The Roost is a convivial neighborhood gem where laptops are discouraged in favor of genuine conversation and communal tables—think of it as a gathering place first, coffee shop second. Their espresso is genuinely excellent and pairs beautifully with house-made pastries and full breakfast offerings, but it's the warm, hospitable staff and the intentional "slow sit" atmosphere that keeps regulars coming back, whether they're settling in with a book or lingering over one of the best hot chocolates in the city.

It's a cute local coffeeshop with bakery items. Coffee is pretty good, and my pastry was very good (one note: please ask before heating if people want that). The staff I met were polite and helpful. Ask about the extra breakfast items not in the case-- some good looking breakfast items like waffles may be available. Important note: If you are someone who works from home and likes to support local businesses during your workday, they make it VERY clear that working there is not welcome at all with big signs on the bench by the window, and I couldn't tell if that applied to the big table in a back room or sitting outside on the patio. I wish I'd read previous reviews before I walked to the 20 minutes to support them while visiting the area. I understand it's a small space, so I don't blame them, I guess. Personally I would always make a coffee and food purchase before sitting for long, and I would leave to make space if it got busy; I have manners! But it was a bummer I couldn't sit a while to experience the neighborhood vibe, as I had to run the 20m back home to start work on time. I would have just driven over if I had known that was the case.

What a great cafe! The owner and staff are quite hospitable. The space is attractive and cozy. The Roost offers coffee, tea, breakfast options and wine tasting events. It also looks like a great place to hang out on a spring or summer day. I am looking forward to my next visit.

This is one of my favorite cafes in Detroit. The food and drinks are delicious and reasonably, and I love the communal seating arrangement. Laptops are not allowed, so bring a book, or chat with neighbors. I appreciate that it’s dog-friendly too.

Best hot chocolate I ever had in my whole life (over 60 years :). Great neighborhood atmosphere. The BLT sandwich and egg frittata both delicious and served with fresh salad or excellent fresh fruit.

Such a quaint little coffee ☕️ shop tucked on a side street in Detroit. The barista was super friendly and helpful. The coffee was absolutely amazing. Plus they have a cute little market and some tables for chatting it up. They make you feel super welcome. The vibe is amazing.
