Crema's Take

Tucked off Broadway between indie bookstores and local spots, Old Soul @ 40 Acres brings Sacramento's coffee community together with genuinely skilled espresso work and a full breakfast-and-lunch menu that goes far beyond typical cafe fare. Staff like Vanessa genuinely care about your experience, whether you're ordering a carefully crafted cortado or a house-made dirty chai, and the space feels equally welcoming whether you're settling in for a slow morning or grabbing a beautifully plated sandwich to go. It's the kind of neighborhood spot that earns its reputation not through hype, but through consistency—where the pastries are fresh, the matcha is thoughtful, and regulars keep coming back because they feel seen.

Who doesn't love old soul? Location: Off Broadway between Fixins and Underground books. Sacramento has no shortage of good coffee shops and Old Soul fits the bill. While not my favorite location I really love this place as it generally is a stop when I am visiting another business down here. There is street parking but the best place to park is off the main street or the parking lot behind the buildings. Service: Staff has always been friendly and great at this location. I think I have had the best interactions in their Capitol Mall location but I havent had any issues here. I think the only issue I had with service here is that when it is busy, it can take quite awhile to get the food, Vibe: This place has a lot of seating areas and surprisingly is not that loud when its full. Lots of different seating areas and nice bright windows onto the main street Food: Love the burritos at this location. I haven't done pastries very often. Generally they are ok but their sandwhich and burritos has been pretty good with a side of coffee. I am a huge fan of the coffee at Old Soul. I generally stick with a cold brew but love picking up beans here for a nice espresso at home.

Apparently they call these drinks a “cortado” and “matcha latte”. It’s very disappointing from a place that is made to seem like they know what they are doing when it comes to coffee. A cortado with twice the liquid volume of what you would expect and a matcha latte that legally identifies as green milk was not a great way to start my afternoon. Hopefully this can just be attributed to undertrained staff and not standard business practice here. Otherwise a great spot if you are looking to be performative and not too worried about the quality or preparation of your drink. Don’t forget your AirPods Max or wired headphones if you plan on coming here with the book that has taken you 8 months to get through.

Standard Cafe with a real food menu (breakfast/salad/sandwich), pastries, coffee, tea and other items. Today I got their hot cocoa, I wish I had been warned that it would be less sweet than most but it otherwise tastes good. Hot steamed milk with powder. Previously had their iced white tea as well which was also refreshing. Edit: the front clerk told me it was a powder and didnt mention it was housemade. Either way it was delicious (drank the whole thing) and perfect for people who think most are too sweet.

I love it here! Their lattes never disappoint (the dirty chai is tasty too). The yogurt bowl is good for breakfast. Vanessa behind the counter is super nice and attentive to guests. She recommended a carnitas burrito and it’s become one of my lunch time favs. It’s a good spot to get some work done too!

I got the TBA (turkey, bacon, avocado) and my daughter got the chicken pesto sandwich. Presentation of the sandwiches were great. Service was good and they were able to make an adjustment for my sandwich. I wanted mayo, but they only had a chipotle aioli type of spread which I added. I still would have preferred mayo. The sandwich contents were warm and the bread was soft. I could have taken more seasoning or spice for the sandwich, but would definitely return.
