Crema's Take

Paperboy East is where Austin's breakfast culture gets elevated without losing its soul—think flaky empanadas with perfectly balanced fillings, poblano and cheddar biscuits that pair beautifully with jalapeño jam, and a thoughtfully curated drink menu that goes beyond standard coffee fare. The hospitality here is genuinely warm and attentive, with staff who roll with the punches (literally keeping spirits high when Saturday rains knocked out the power), making it the kind of place where lingering over a leisurely breakfast or coffee date feels like the whole point. Fair warning: it's popular enough that you'll want to hit Open Table early or prepare for a wait, but regulars swear the generously-poured boozy brunch drinks and elevated comfort food make it absolutely worth it.

UPDATE: Paperboy continues to be a 5 star spot with amazing hospitality/service! We went on Saturday 3/7, and the rain took the power out right after we got our drinks and cinnamon toast. They completely comped our drinks/food and even gave us a free orange brioche roll which was delicious! We appreciated this gesture so much and they handled the power outage situation so well!! The hype is real!! We got the migas and steak sandwich, and received a free cinnamon toast for my birthday. The first bite of that toast may have been the best bite of any food I’ve had recently—crisp, caramelized toast covered with tangy, buttery, and not-too-sweet mascarpone spread, topped with a salty and sweet walnut streudel. Chefs kiss! We’re super excited to try the chicken and biscuits next time since we saw them at another table and they looked absolutely amazing!!

I had the potato and chorizo empanada and the cheesy hash brown casserole. The empanada dough was flaky and delicious and the filling was really well balanced. The hash browns casserole had a beautiful crispy exterior and a creamy inside. It came with a jalapeño sauce that gave it a nice heat and just amazing. My husband had the pancakes with scrambled eggs and holy pancake it was huge and fluffy and the eggs were done perfectly 10/10 highly recommend. I will say that it’s easier to get in with a reservation or go really early.

If you're looking for a breakfast that feels a bit more elevated than your standard diner, this is the spot. Their menu features some truly elegant and unique options. I tried the Migas, and the texture was spot on—the mix of eggs, fresh corn tortillas, pico de gallo, and cheese was delicious. It stays packed here..Even on a Friday, it was buzzing. Expect a wait, though I managed to snag a spot at the bar pretty quickly. There is a small lot upfront, but don't panic if it's full—there is additional parking in the back alley. The staff are incredibly kind and attentive despite how busy they are. The coffee was just "okay," but the fresh food and great service make it well worth the price and the visit.

Drinks are boozy, generous portion, definitely one level above the average brunch spot in Austin. I recommend to put an alert on open table to secure a spot if you don’t want to wait. Else you will accidentally order an extra cocktail while waiting in line ;)

Absolutely amazing food with a lovely atmosphere and staff. The poblano & cheddar biscuits are addictive, especially with the jalapeño jam. I am also pretty sure the Earl Grey Cold Brew has ruined my life since I do not live here and have not found anything comparable to it in my area. Very friendly staff, and the dishes are beautiful and delicious. Cheddar hashbrown was also delicious.
