The Works Bakery Cafe

Crema's Take

This Amherst institution leans into elevated, ingredient-forward fare—think organic-mayo BLTs loaded with mesclun greens rather than simple sandwiches—making it a popular study spot for the college crowd despite some inconsistency in execution. While the bustling, student-filled atmosphere and full breakfast menu have their charm, reviewers consistently flag cleanliness concerns that undercut the otherwise welcoming vibe. If you're seeking an ambitious neighborhood cafe with solid pastries and a lively scene, The Works has potential, but you may want to check in on recent visits before committing to a longer stay.

Ya, okay. It's Amherst, so your BLT isn't gonna be a "regular" BLT and it's not gonna cost $6. It'll be elevated, have funny tasting organic mayo and be overloaded with mesclun and baby greens. A little oasis for the Whole Foods crowd and not my speed at all. That being said, the staff was super pleasant and the atmosphere was quiet and comfortable. Similar to the Black Sheep but without the crowd and the attitude. Do it if you have $15 to spare for coffee and a nosh.

the salad was fine. However, the iced latte was absolutely disgusting. Made the mistake of DoorDashing it, so no refund. It had absolutely zero coffee flavor, it was a like a glass of oddly-flavored iced oat milk. Won't ever waste $ on that again. Save yourself and make your own coffee :-) this was undrinkable.

Most of the tables were covered in crumbs and some had trash on and around them. There were also cobwebs and spiders on the wall next to me. I also would’ve appreciated them not playing loud metal music while I tried to enjoy reading my book. On the bright side the food got made quickly and the cookie was great. I got the brain freeze coffee though and it had a sour taste and after a little while the coffee went to the bottom and I was just left with watery coffee ice.

This place is disgusting. The floors, tables, coffee station and over all place is filthy. Stains on the floor that have obviously been there for a while, food left on the tables and chairs with no one even attempting to clean any of it up. Old coffee, sugar, creamer stuck on and drying on the coffee bar. The coffee bar wasn't even stocked with lids, raw sugar, half and half or much of the other essentials. The food is lacking in flavor and was partially cold, even though i ordered a breakfast sandwich. This place, in my opinion is just another example of why I don't come to restaurants much anymore. No service, food is over priced and low quality. Just a lousy experience. I would not recommend this place to a friend. Why is this place so pretentious?

Came from brunch and it was busy with a line out the door. All the tables were taken, mostly with students studying. The young man taking the orders was nice. There was a lot of staff behind the counter filling the orders. I was disappointed with my sandwich. Just was not tasty or fresh. Reminded me of a Panera, over priced and not that good.
