Sweet Bay Cafe

Crema's Take
“This Bellingham breakfast favorite trades sleek minimalism for genuine warmth, with genuinely kind staff who keep tables feeling looked-after even when the café fills to capacity. Their kitchen shines with creative, flavor-forward takes on classic breakfast—think roasted veggie scrambles and inventive benedicts alongside hearty sandwiches—making it the kind of spot where regulars come back wondering why they didn't discover it sooner. Fair warning: the vibe leans bohemian and convivial rather than quiet, so leave the serious work calls at home, but come hungry and ready to linger.”

Meh. If you're into a hippie vibe with the most uncomfortable seating and slowest service ever then keep reading! Music: weird and too loud to hold an actual conversation. I don't speak loudly, and I'm not into yelling to convey a message, so I just sat there saying nothing while we waited for our food, which kills a vibe fast. Bathroom sinks: In the main walk thru area which felt awkward. Breakfast: although there were only 3 tables we waited a good half hour and one breakfast meal came with a SALAD with a vinaigrette dressing. It is cutely decorated but man the seating is so completely painful all around. So waiting for 2 breakfasts was not worth it.
I would give this 10 stars if I could! Staff: we arrived and it was already a full space. Everyone was upbeat and kind, kept checking in. More people came in and pretty soon the waiting area was also full. We were not in a hurry and the staff were so considerate and sweet, offering communal seating as well. It felt like walking into a local spot that would know you by name. Food: I believe this is going to be my new favorite breakfast outing. Although I was so excited to dig in so the image was taken after already eating some food. My friend and I split two items so that we could each try more things. She ordered a mimosa and it was perfectly done! We had the biscuit egg sandwich with greens as well as root vegetable skillet. Portions were just right so that you did not leave too full, but very satisfied. Price was also set well compared to industry pricing. The sandwich was incredible! Aioli sauce was balanced in flavor and spice, bacon was crispy, egg was perfect, biscuit had a nice crunch and so much flavor! The greens were coating in some sort of sauce, but only lightly so the flavors worked perfectly together for a fresh experience. The root vegetable skillet was amazing. Having the right balance of choices of vegetables and the perfectly medium cooked poached egg. Environment: The space is well done. Has a cozy feel, yet not cramped. Despite being so ful of people it did not feel crowded and noise level was unexpectedly manageable. We never felt rushed and even with communal choice of eating it did not feel invasive. I will definitely return and impressed with both the staff and the food.
What a nice place! We had two boys order the barnyard and micheladas (happy boys) and I took our wonderful server’s recommendation (hi Inez!) and got the roasted veggie scramble and it was SO GOOD! Thank you for having so many vegetarian options on your menu but this is definitely my favorite dish so far. Will be back again to try coffee drinks and baked goods. Cheerz
Refreshingly vibrant breakfast flavors! I found this new breakfast spot after Googling & I'm so glad we gave it a try. I had a delicious blend between a traditional eggs benedict and biscuits & gravy with their eggs benny + country gravy. This country gravy is the most flavorful I've ever had in my life. Chock full of meat! The hollandaise sauce had great flavor. I might decide to get the gravy on the side next time as it was a lot of flavor (but that's just me). At first I thought the pancakes would be overcooked, as they were darker on one side (and a bit harder), but surprisingly, they were just fine & I loved them. I'm a new coffee drinker & their drip coffee was great - smooth. Loved their decor, it was nice and bright without being glaring, service was prompt. I love their restroom setup - a few doors with just a toilet in them. You go out to a central hallway to wash your hands. I like the efficiency of it & I feel it practically guarantees everyone will do it if they think someone is watching :) I'll be back for breakfast for sure. This might just be my new fav. in town.
Sweet sweet bay cafe, this place is so delicious, once again added to my list of “why didn’t I go here sooner”. The chicken sandwich was amazing and comes with a healthy amount of fries (always important). The avocado Benedict was perfect as well with a perfectly runny egg. The outdoor seating is very cozy. Go treat yourself to this place sometime, you won’t be disappointed.
