The Quick Shot

Bellingham concentrates its coffee downtown around Holly and Cornwall, where Camber roasts and NEKO runs the most reviewed room in the city, then spreads south to Fairhaven for Cafe Blue and Shirlee Bird. Caffe Adagio has been at it eighteen years, Makeworth fills a multi-level space on State Street, and finds like Cafe Velo and Cool Beans are what locals actually use. Crema tracks 80 independent shops in Bellingham, chains excluded.

Bellingham is 90 miles north of Seattle and 20 miles south of Canada, which means it gets Vancouver weekend traffic in one direction and Seattle weekend traffic in the other, and mostly ignores both. Western Washington University puts about 16,000 students in a town of 95,000, and the usual result of that ratio is a lot of mediocre coffee sold cheaply near campus. That is not what happened here. The downtown core around Holly, Cornwall, and Prospect has a genuine roasting scene, and Fairhaven, the separate Victorian village at the south end, has its own. The through line is that these rooms are built for sitting in through a grey winter, because that is most of the year. Bring a book, expect to hear four conversations about mountain biking, and note that a surprising number of good places close by 2pm.

Local Grounds

Downtown

Holly, Cornwall, Prospect, and Railroad Ave. Brick buildings, a working arts scene, and the densest coffee in the city. Entirely walkable.

Fairhaven

A separate Victorian village two miles south, with its own main street and its own coffee. Bookshops, the Alaska ferry terminal, and the best baking in town.

The State Street Corridor

North State Street between downtown and the university. Where students and the people who left the university ten years ago overlap.

Meridian & the North End

Up Meridian toward Bellis Fair and Bakerview. Strip malls and drive-throughs, plus a couple of stands that are far better than their surroundings.

Worth the Grind

Barista’s Notes

  • 01Camber, Cafe Blue, and Shirlee Bird all close at 2pm. Bellingham's best coffee is a before-noon activity. Locus downtown runs until 6 and is the reliable afternoon fallback.
  • 02Fairhaven is two miles south of downtown and functions as a separate town. Cafe Blue and Shirlee Bird are both there and both worth the drive. Do not try to walk it from downtown.
  • 03Shirlee Bird is open Monday through Thursday only. She arrives at 4am and bakes everything herself, and when it is gone it is gone.
  • 04Cool Beans on Meridian opens at 6am and is a stand, not a room. It is the only good option in the city before 6:30.
  • 05Cafe Velo is closed Monday and Tuesday. So is NEKO on Tuesday and 11th Hour through Wednesday. Bellingham takes the start of the week off.
Crema FindsHidden Gems

High-rated, low-profile spots that don’t show up when tourists Google “best coffee near me.” You’re welcome.

Bellingham has more genuinely good coffee than a town of 95,000 has any business supporting, and it does it without the self-regard of the city to the south. Browse every independent shop below.
